Excelsior class was always one of my favourites from classic trek.

Alright, a Klingon Bird of Prey, a Warbird (warning, curvy!), Miranda class, Oberth (again, curvy), the Defiant, a Runabout, and the Excelsior.
I might have to mention that I don't consider any events or ships from the new movie Star Trek. That movie is the kind of stuff that makes me wanna go amok.
Sithspit, I had a Bird of Prey, the Defiant, and an ISD on my old computer.
Meh
Maybe my father has some of my stuff left...

And of course, following Federation Starships will use the same scale.

That's a dangerous thing to say round these boards, to be honest why not just import any model you want from the 1001 trek interest groups out there?
As for scale, well we have a slight problem there as no one is strictly sure as to the scale of oolite so importing ships might get a little bit tricky.
(I'm starting to come around to the idea of taking a foot and a metre. Splitting the difference and calling it an oolite feeter)
so one foot = 0.3048 meters
1 - 0.3048 = 0.6952 which is the total difference between the two.
0.6952 / 2 = 0.3476 or half the difference, if we add that to the length of one foot we should get a meter value that's splitting the difference between the 2 values.
Ladies and gentlemen for your review I present a mathmatical solution to our scaling issue the oolite feeter:
0.6524 meters or
2.14 feet
or 0.35674 fathoms
or to simplify
0.65 metres
2.13 feet
this would make the cobra III:
(W×H×L) 84.5m x19.5m x42.25m
So you could happily land one on a football pitch with about 5 m to spare either end.
for a more visual comparison, this baby is 85.5 meters in length;

Do we have a workable compromise or what?

My wife bought the full original series plus the animated one. I thik that she will play oolite when Constitution class is ready!!!!

Live long and prosper Jagen!
// BTW, maybe it's time to do a page on Wiki about a coupe of minor
// spage-oriente religions based on ancient legends.
// It seems that many ship designes follow these religions in ooLite...

I'm confused, I thought the dimensions of all the ships were documented?

Right, the unit in oolite is metre, but there is some argument that it should be feet.

I think the problem is usually one of aesthetics and practicalities (i.e. docking) all the ships from the classics derive their numbers from Holdstock's original Elite Manual based I guess on B&B's own numbers (based in turn on the actual mathematical models of their ships!).
However, because of scaling issues in Oolite - 30km wide planets, 1km wide stations, huge cargo pods so they can be seen etc, the ACTUAL size of an Oolite metre therefore is not only not fixed but has no relationship to a RL metre of the same name.
You make your ship and see how it looks in game, see if it can dock and if it looks too big or too small or it can't dock and you want it too then rescale as appropriate...

I know this is raking over old coals but is anyone interested in think tanking this through in order to fix this once and for all?
At the very least it would be an interesting thought experiment, at most we might actually be able to come up with plausible solutions.
I'm thinking of treating it like a design tec project instead of an argument.

I think actually the reverse -- I think there is some reasonably strong feeling that it should be left as is.

Docking is none of my concerns, that ship is not supposed to dock that way.
Docking computers might be a good investion for this ship.
My only problem is that everytime I want to jump into hyperspace, the program shuts down.
Suggestions?

It might be interesting for anyone who is interested in flying and properly docking such mega-ships that Frame & meself have a cunning plan to solve that conundrum via Frame creating a transfer shuttle script that will make it look as if the player carrier's Commander is being shuttled back and forth to/from stations and hopefully carriers while the player carrier is waiting in a few kilometres distance for the captain to return.
The nescessary code to accomplish this has already been included into the trunk by some nice devs.
So you can put these concerns to rest, some time during the next weeks this is going to be resolved once and for all
Cheers

Docking is really no concern.
I don't even make it through the system, the game freezes about halfway through it. I use the Oolite 1.72.2, if that helps.

Have a look at the "Logs" folder somewhere in your Oolite folders.
Perhaps you could post the error log from such a crash here? There are people here (not me
) who might be able to suggest possible causes from there.

Well, I guess we are going find out; If people are interested PM me and we'll have a frank discussion about it.

Error log...
You mean like this?
***** ERROR - attempt to normalise vector ( 0,00000, 0,00000, 0,00000)
