I think the military laser heat rate is absolutely spot on. Any slower, and the game would be far too easy. The military laser as it is now means you can't just slow to a halt and be a stationary laser turret like you could in Elite, instead you're forced to make allowances for the heatup rate.

Not usually. The way their AI checks for a path of intercept means they usually end up performing a steadily-diminishing spiral course towards their targets as they persue them.
You're right - I must have been fantastically lucky that time, because I certainly haven't managed it since... or maybe the missile just happened to run out of fuel at the instant I fired

You're right, of course. I just succumbed to a bit of pilot-whinge after getting dusted off by Thargoids.

I second that opinion. Initially it seems frustratingly overclocked (heh) but after awhile, it only adds to the challenge of gameplay. You know you won't be able to finish an opponent in one salvo, if it's a strong one, most standard ships you can finish in even half a salvo...
So you have to have some kind of plan before committing.

really? must try that!

heh. My 'plan' is usually something like: I'll swoop in from behind, take out the Sidewinder-escorts first, and then hunt for the remaining Mamba's, while keeping an eye out for GalCops before I have a go at that fat Boa...

I usually just take out the big guy first, often staying *right* on his tail so he dumps a long stream of easily scoopable cargo, trusting in the AI's innacuracy and my military shields to see me through. after knocking out the biggie, the escorts being come less concerted and easier to pick off. or, if i'm feeling lazy, i just energy-bomb them...

Lex: your avatar - as far as I can make out it reads "Paperback scrawl your hidden poems". What does it mean? Is that Michael Jackson in the image?

And I thought it was James Iha...

It's James Iha (smashing pumpkins). You're correct on what it says - it's a lyric from a song called "Try, Try, Try". It's basically referring to the fact that beauty doesn't die in even the worst circumstances. the lyrics are
here.
The video explains it more - it's about homelessness, drug use etc - but still having dreams about a better life.
Why, d'you like it? or is it bugging the hell outta you?

You probably already know but it's rumoured that they're getting back together? Here's an
article.

I second Wombat's advice... although is it just me, or is avoiding combat harder with the new residual wormhole code? About 20-30% of the time, I get jumped shortly after arriving insystem by pirates who have ridden in on my coat tails, so to speak.
If you can avoid/survive that and get out of the corridor, you're good to go.

With the last version of OOlite, I found a old feeling (C64) about combat : fleeing is a good tactic.
