Advice: make a regular back-up copy of your main commander's save-file - I probably have half a dozen stashed in various places.

Yup, I have a deadly pilot lost in the aether somewhere for failing to follow this sagely advice.

(No herbs were harmed in the making of this post)

I wonder if your saves are stored somewhere else? If you do a file search for *oolite-save* that will tell us if they still exist.

Or use time machine on a mac. Because you get incremental backups, you just select a date and open the commander from that date. (But, when relying on that, you must backup the backup. )

Hi Everil,
Welcome to Oolite,
I make a point to back up the whole game and addons, They easily fit on one disc.
I have a download folder just for Oolite OXPs in their zipped form and then folders for the type, ie, Equipment, Candy (biggest), Missions, Ships and so on.

So many OXPs, not enough machine. Or time to play them all.

I also keep a cd with save game folders from the games I play.
Only started doing this after old 'TDM' (This Damn Machine) started repeatedly having fits, requiring a reformat and install from sys discs.
What a slow thing that was, well under a Ghz. clock.

So grab a cd mark it game save, and ever few week/month copy the save folder from game and paste to the disc.
Ignore all windows XP/Vista and the rest bull, it's a simple copy/paste. Providing you open the folder tree/My computer so you can see your drives and folders.

Oh, If you altered anything in your save file with windows note pad, well take it as gone.
I made that mistake. Only once. There are a few threads that discuss this, but enough to be said Go get Notepad ++ It's free download and heaps better. Doesn't add extensions to the file making it invisable.
