Book is, Ancient Shores by Jack McDevitt.

Reference to "CaptSolo's patch" signifies the setting for this work as my home state of North Dakota. The boundary between that and neighbouring Minnesota is the Red River, which flows north, emptying into Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. At the end of the last ice age, some 10k years ago, as the glaciers began receding, the ice sheet blocked the normal drainage creating Lake Agassiz. It was named after Louis Agassiz, a Swiss scientist who found evidence of ancient shores.

I think I've said enough as one who finds other lands more interesting. For me it is the British Isles.
