@Simon

In that howto - how do you get the outlines into GIMP? That's the bit that's foiled me so far.

Thats because the howto assumes you know how to use wings3d :)

In Wings3D - when you click on items in the outliner window you get a menu. Explore them.

In the menu for the texture you just created, there is an option "make external". After editing the texture, see how it looks with "refresh" and the file gets reloaded. Before you do the final export to wavefront formal, make sure the file is internal.

I can also get the positions of lights for glowmaps right by importing (file > import image) to map and assigning it to the diffuse component of the material. This gives me a black model with while where the lights go: I can tweak the positions by moving layers around until they are in the right place. Note: if an imported texture has any transparency, Wings will render those bits invisible. AND: though Wings can assign normal and bump maps to a model for export to formats that support this, the onboard renderer does not use them ... to check them you'll need blender, the java console, or just load the model into Oolite.

What version of Wings3D are you using? (I know how to use Wings3D to a certain extent - I've just had to convert a tutorial that used AC3D to one that uses Wings3D for our off-site/distance learning students who don't have access to the university wide license for AC3D) - I notice in your how to the Wings3D icons are pyramids which implies version 0.9(ish), whereas in 1.4.1 which I'm using at the moment those icons are cubes - the outliner menus don't seem to be where they used to be (in 0.9 which is the last version I used before we moved to AC3D) - which is why I asked what I thought was a relatively straightforward question about the outliner - I know what I wanted to do, I just couldn't find how to do it in the new version of Wings3D.

I shall explore some more.

1.0.2
in 1.4.1 which I'm using at the moment those icons are cubes
that is the default for 1.0.2 as well, but you can change that in the settings (edit settings): I have a choice of "old style" red pyramids or the normal blue cubes
- the outliner menus don't seem to be where they used to be
???
You have found the outliner window right?
If not then you have to bring it up (window > outliner).
You have to leftclick on the name of the bit you want to highlight it, then rt-click to get the menu.
Here's another look:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXSu4dI-R3g
... this version of wings3d looks different from mine in terms of workflow - there are more detailed menus for eg.

The newer version of wings takes a little getting used to, especially if you use spacebar to de-select something because it now functions differently. But otherwise it's just menus that have changed.

That must be extremely recent!
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/ ... in_Wings3d
... the vega-strike wiki still has "make external" in the same place (July 2010).
http://nendowingsmirai.yuku.com/topic/7560
... (21st May 2011) this discussion places the "make external" option off the texture in the outliner window still.

So, what has changed in the wings3D menus that produces DH's confusion?

February this year I think it came out, but I think you misunderstood me I was more or less just making minor conversation about wings latest release and not really contributing anything of value hehe.

DaddyHoggy probably just accidentally closed the outliner window, in which case he just has to open it again as you suggested earlier.

I've found the outliner menu (see pic), but what workflow do I need to follow to actually generate my black lined outline on a white background on a separate image so I can texture it in GIMP - that's the only bit I'm stuck on. (I've been doing it manually by taking a screen shot - cutting out the default texture from the screenshot, scaling and then applying texture in GIMP to that.)

UV Window:
Right click the rainbow background, click [Create Texture] a window will pop up, next to [Background] button, click [Options] then [Colour] choose white, click [OK] twice, next to [Draw Edges] click [Options] click [Draw border edges] then [Colour], choose black click [OK] twice.

Outliner Window:
Right click image, choose make external, name it whatever.png

(dont forget the png bit or it will save it as a bitmap.

Explained already in a couple of posts before this, but I still explain it again:
https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?f= ... 8&start=35
see point 4.

For a Windows user, Wings3D version 1.2 should be used (quite recent and quite stable).

1.4.1 is the latest stable - 7th Feb. '11

With apologies to Zieman ... manchi wasp:
Image
rzzl fzzl grzzl - I now have too many models ... I'll have to start including them in oxps.
Fortunately my arm has responded to anti-inflammatories. This was a bad one folks and it's left my fingertips tingling.
(I know what the problem is - I'm procrastinating over skinning those carriers ... that and I'm supposed to be learning oolites source code.)

Anyway that top one comes from a trawl through the oxps looking for likely scripts - I heard there was one with the wasp that made it go insane ... so I had a look and liked the wasp. The original is all purpley though. In fact - the Far Arm ships are pretty good already.
