These two last ones were really appaling, and not in a good sense... sorry for the opinion!

The last one looks a bit Commodore 64 to me.

Well not everything in space is beautifull. I actually agree only on the last. I'm gonna tweak the texture some more.
But the to see the constellation in motion is nice.

to be fair to PAGroove, he has to paint his textures onto the models i send him and i always keep forgetting to include the UV map template so he basically has to guess where to paint his textures through trial & error, sorry about that mate!

@ PAGroove
by the way did you get the alpha map merging thing sorted? from the screen shots it sort of looks like the stations are giving off light from every surface since there's no shadowing happening on the surfaces pointing away from the sun, this could be because the alpha channel is filled with white and not black.
if you want to switch off the illumination map, edit the griff_ico.fragment file in a text editor, find this line

Code: Select all

diffuse += colorMap.a * 3.0; // multiplier here to increase glow effect
and add a // infront of it, so it reads

Code: Select all

// diffuse += colorMap.a * 3.0; // multiplier here to increase glow effect
that will basically comment out the line and stop it being used by the shader, you can always delete the // when you want to switch the illumination map back on.

Today Mr. Johnson, chairman of Frontiertech announced the Frontiertech World ranger C2. The fist design was criticized by some planetary governments and costumers. The Worldranger Prototype 1 went never in production. 'Space Architecture Daily' described it as 'So ugly that Hell is more beautiful' The inhabitants of the planet Teraed where the fist to get this type of station in their sky but on seeing the first prototype raised their voice in protest.

This obviously helped because Frontiertech learnt from the criticism. The whole design staff was replaced. Chief designer Aer Ri Ri Ro was very angry of this and it is rumored that he has placed a bid on the head of Mr Johnson in one of the local space bars. Because of the situation Mr. Johnson is currently the best guarded man in the Teraed Hub sector (Galaxy 1)

Oh, yes! Much better, now!

I lust love the way that you've even gone to the trouble of creating an amusing back-story explaining the cancelled texture, on top of actually heeding some criticism!

Well done that man. :D

p.s. I still think it looks very C64 - and that's not necessarily a bad thing in itself ;-)

@Cmdr. Maegi & Ace Garp

No problem as you can see FrontierTech inc is very concerned with the opinion of the planetary governments. It's the first company using VR technology in their brochures. These stations are just to expensive to just build and have to be towed a long way in the 'Station Mover' (tm) to be placed in orbitl :wink:

@ Griff,

See your e-mail. No problem with a little try and error making these stations. It is relaxing in a weird way. But it's more difficult than people might think. So this is a call to other people: Why not try to design you own. Make an image of 512 by 512 and have fun 8)

Top texturing protip: work at a higher resolution (say, 2048 x 2048) and scale down. Small editing artefacts disappear in a puff of anti-aliasing.

Thnx Ahruman for this tip. I will try it out in a next design 8)

So here is part 1 of the background stories on the stations. Version 1.2. is in the pipeline which includes the ICO's. Griff and I are play-testing this version on the moment.

1.2. will be the last version for some time to come. Griff needs time to contribute to other projects and I myself want to lean more things like modeling.

I will also put the OXP and the background information on the WIKI. Here are some background stories already:

== Variants ==

As The Coriolis stations became 'common sight' in the 8 Galaxies local developers started to develop more variants. It was often the case that certain life-forms needed adaptations or the stations where altered for artistic reasons. Nowadays at least 9 variants are known. 8 versions from various independent manufactures are available in the [PAGroove_Stations_v1.1 OXP] > enter URL here ...

Other versions are the Gritty ones (see WIKI). But these are not in this OXP. However I recommend them!

Griff Coriolis -X1

It soon became clear that the Lave prototype was VERY basic. Griff Research LTD was asked to improve upon the design. It soon became the new standard. For a lot of Lave prototypes Griff Research LTD came up with the Corolius upgrade package.

The Griff-Corolius -X1 offered several new features:

- Advanced communication array with Spaceview lane surveillance tm. This communication center has better computers than the Lave 1. Space traffic can be monitored with multiple view cams.
-VSLS- Visual Space Landing System. These set of lights make it easier for rookie pilots to line up.
-Advanced ship storage. With the latest in space compression

Griff- Metaforce Coriolis -X1

These are the upgraded standard Coriolis to Griff -X1 status. It looks different from the outside. The design is not as clean as the 'factory X1' as the materials and hull plating where shipped in from nearby systems of even made of raw materials mined from rock hermits

RaTech Gold Coriolis

RaTech (Leaded by Sun Ra Ra> a former Hoopy Casino owner who went into ship and station design) developed their own version. This version had luxury Gold plating for artistic purposes. This is often regarded as a waste of materials. Inside these stations everything is luxury even on low-tech worlds. This makes a stay on this variant more pleasant than the standard versions. The 'Gold Bars' are often also equipped with slot machines and other games. The downside however is that maintenance is very difficult with all those non-standard parts.

Solar-Tec-Coriolis

This design is the most energy-clean design of all the Coriolis variants. The whole hull is composed of solar panels. As a result of this there are no internal generators. This saves space. Therefore these Corolius Stations are often known to have all kinds of special features ranging from little zoo's, greenhouses to extra conference centers inside the station core. There are low and higher tech variants but a traveler can not see that from the outside
