Snowy UK picture

Post by DaddyHoggy »

I've just registered with NEODAAS at the University of Dundee so I was able to download for personal use the image that's been on the news today (this is only the medium res version, the hi-res is MUCH larger), perhaps some ideas for all those clever planetary texture makers...

Odd that Ireland hardly has any snow. Is that how it usually is?

No, its very rare for the whole of the UK to have snow, apart from one or two places.

Hi

Yes VERY rare for the whole country.
I was in Aberdeen very early 80's. -37C for 4 days, very rare. Weather was coming straight from Siberia, literaly, that was the way the wind was blowing.
Though as said, The whole country didn't get the effect. Just the North East coast. Cold winds from the east meets warm from the west.

Great storms over the mountains that year. Err, as long as
you weren't out in them!

And yes normal for Ierland to be snow free.
North Atlantic Drift or for us older folk the Gulf stream.

Same reason I have photos of palm trees growing happily
in some places in West Scotland. Micro climates.

On another Note;

D_H,

Can I use the pic to send to my family in an E-mail?
They live in the low lands (Central Scotland), well most of them.
Some in the Highlands, but they are used to this sort of weather.

I've lived in Oz (WA) for the last couple of decades and a bit. We are having normal weather.. About 40C or above. Don't expect
to see rain for the next few months.
LOOK OUT!!!
OOPS..

-37? You're lucky you survived, at least if my parents' report of the poor insulation and single pane windows in Britain is true. :)

The BBC are currently using it (or something extremely similar) on their website here.

It's the same image but the BBC have trimmed off the Copyright notice at the top! (Although they do state where the image is from in the text) and NEODAAS do say you can do with the image what you will, they just want to build up a demographic of usage - so I see no issues in you sending it to your relatives, or if you're a bit worried, you could just register with NEODAAS - it takes about 30s...
