Galactic Hyperjump backwards
Ramirez's Feudal States came out and my Commander is in G2. I would like to have the possibility to jump back to 1 in an instant (for 5000 Credits)
Would a direction controlled galactic hyperdrive be possible?

While I'm not 100% into the procedural random number generation
I think it should be possible, since the galaxy seed number is what everything is generated from, and that these are known sequences of two digit numbers.
It Should be possible to code such a possibility... and add this as a new Equipment.
not sure what to call it though...

bi-directional Galactic Hyperdrive. for 6000 credits you can choose to go forward or backwards?Frame wrote:While I'm not 100% into the procedural random number generation

I'm not in favour of it. Galactic jumping being one-way is a heritage of Elite, IMO.
And if you absolutely, positively have to do it, you still can edit your save-file.
(Tipp: For playtesting things in any galaxy I keep one save-file from every galaxy. Thereby I can switch instantly, like if I want to check the new Tianve.oxp, although I am in Galaxy 7 with my main commander and have no intention to leave it any time soon.)

Yes I have that already. But I wanted to go back with my main commander.Commander McLane wrote:I'm not in favour of it. Galactic jumping being one-way is a heritage of Elite, IMO.

Ok it's doing the 8 first then.

In Elite it was just a left barrel-roll on the 6 seed bytes to go forward one galaxy, so I never really understood why the option of going back was not in the original game. Perhaps each galaxy was meant to get more and more unruly and only going through all 8 would get you enough kills to get up to Elite - but I dont think there was that much difference between the 8 galaxies once you encountered the Anarchies upon arriving in Gal 3 and 4.

Perhaps the one-way operation was a way of forcing the player to explore all these galaxies, for instance most of us would never have left Gal 1 if it had not been for the constrictor mission.
In Oolite many OXP's are specific to only 1 Galaxy. I have often thought about taking something like Lovecats and making variants (different species?) work in other galaxies, but that is probably quite a bit of work for the original author/other writers and maybe viewed as too repetitious by the player.

White dots were so much easier to hit
Registered just to say I like this idea, and would love to know how to make either a second Galactic Hyperspace that returns you to a previous galaxy, or make it so that using Galactic Hyperspace in Galaxy 8 returns you to Galaxy 1. But i can't find any scripting commands or anything in the scripts/plists to do something along the lines of "setGalaxy = 1"
As right now, using Galactic Hyperspace is anti-open-ended, as you can never go back. And i prefer an open ended universe instead of linear ones like we currently have.

Unless I've been very very very much misinformed, this is exactly how the GH has always worked, and still does.ADCK wrote:... make it so that using Galactic Hyperspace in Galaxy 8 returns you to Galaxy 1.

Yes, this is correct. And with the ability to target specific locations on galaxies at the time of jump using scripting, I think that it is more open ended than ever. Setting galactic hyperspace to jump backwards is possible, but it is a fundamental gameplay change, so if it is implemented, I would only consider it as a game option defaulting to NO.CheeseRedux wrote:Unless I've been very very very much misinformed, this is exactly how the GH has always worked, and still does.ADCK wrote:... make it so that using Galactic Hyperspace in Galaxy 8 returns you to Galaxy 1.
Ah, my bad, i went and made an assumption that it was a one way trip, Silly meanother_commander wrote:Yes, this is correct.
