Oolite crashes ever time after launching my Cobra

Post by Jorge van den Poem »

Hello all,

Iḿ a new user of Ubuntu linux version 9.10 and I try to play yhe game however every time I launch my Cobra the game crashes. I installed the 1.73.4 package on my system and It does not put an Oolite Icon in my Aplications Games menu. I managed to run the game with searching for the proper file to launch Oolite. After dubble clicking on that file the program starts and when i Launch my Cobra the program crashes. I would very much like to play the game but every time the above happens. I wonder if anyone can help me :-) I tried to understand the logfile after the crash but in my humble opinion the system does not detect strange behaviour :-( Any help is very welcome and appreciated!

Jorge: It would be a good idea posting the log file anyway. It might indicate a problem that is not immediately obvious and could help the Linux-savvy guys here in assisting you.

Jorge: From a terminal execute the following:

Code: Select all

# oolite
Play and following a crash, post any message appearing on your terminal window.

Oolite crashes ever time after launching my Cobra

Post by Jorge van den Poem »

@ Getafix, thank you for your reply I have already deleted everething called oolite but I will be glad to do what you suggest. I am going to reinstall the 1.73.4 oolite autopackage for Linux x86, so far the answer on your second post! The 1.73.4 version for Ubuntu does only install on Ubuntu 9.04. I have Ubuntu 9.10. As soon as I have installed oolite and have run it I will post the messages the terminal produces!

Jorge.

@Jorge: Just to clarify, I have successfully installed the 1.73.4 autopackage package on Ubuntu 9.10.
We will just have to see what goes wrong with your setup.

Oolite crashes ever time after launching my Cobra

@ Getafix: first the stuff from the terminal when installing the package :

# Preparing package: Oolite for Linux
# Checking for required C library versions ... passed
# Installing package: Oolite for Linux (package 1 of 1)
# 100%[==================================================] Extracting
# Making Oolite directory in /usr/lib/Oolite

# Installing icons...
# Installing menu items...

# Updating package database...

The following package was successfully installed:
* Oolite for Linux

The following menu entry is now available:
* Oolite (Game, Simulation)

This installation used 33.03 MiB (34.63 MB) of disk space.

I must mention that NO menu item has been installed by this procedure!

And following the output on the terminal when running and crashing the game:

joop@joop-laptop:~$ oolite
2009-11-30 12:31:50.521 oolite[22176] File NSUserDefaults.m: 615. In [NSUserDefaults +standardUserDefaults] Improper installation: No language locale found

oolite: radeon_dma.c:210: radeonRefillCurrentDmaRegion: Controletest 'dma_bo->bo->cref == 1' faalt.
Aborted

Erk. It looks like Oolite died with an error. When making an error
report, please copy + paste the log above into the report.

(Press Ctrl-C to continue)

I hope that you understand what all this means for me it could have been written in old Chinese or whatever other difficult language!

Thanks for the attention,

@Jorge:
Unfortunately, it seems to me that, you have hit onto a mesa ati driver bug. See here.

You could give it a shot by setting the Visual Effects tab to "None",
in the desktop menu System/Preferences/Appearance. However,
from what I've read, it will most probably not resolve the issue.

Concerning the game shortcut, in the desktop menu Applications/Games
you should be able to find an Oolite entry. You are running on Gnome, right?

@ Getafix Setting the visual effects to none did not work as you already said. Whell I think this is the end of the story then until the bug is fxed?
Thanks anywhy for your help it has been helpful now we know what the reason is and it has a name :-) About the desktop icon that is not realy a problem.

I think I will try to run Kubuntu beside Ubuntu I learned that kubuntu runs Oolite well I have a virtual Kubuntu on my Mac and that works okay!

thank you very much for the help,

@Jorge:
In case you do not care experimenting around with your 9.10 installation,
you could try proprietary drivers from AMD Graphics Drivers & Software.
Make sure you read any available instructions, though.
This Ubuntu HowTo/ATI could be also useful.
