I haven't flown the Wolf, only the MKII/SE and I agree it is a strong combat ship. Its strength is in its speed and resilience, rather than agility, as it doesn't roll very well. The Neolite-Fer-De-Lance is another excellent choice. Faster and more agile than the Wolf MKII, but can't take hits very well.

For players who want to go bounty hunting and do not mind to "cheat" a little, the Merlin probably is the best. Really, I sold it because it's too easy with it. The ship has the cargo capacity of a Caduceus while being similar tiny as a single cargo canister. It can fly between the beams of a Wolf without being hit...
The Merlin sound's quite ridiculous. The Llama is another vessel which has a ridiculously small profile to cargo capacity ratio. I don't have the Merlin installed on my Oolite and the Llama I've nerfed heavily.

this business about changing the stats after a perceived "wieght" change i e more cargo,

not a bad idea at all, in the RPG world, megatraveller introduced that, but it made ship design very very difficult, however a simplified version here would be hugely impressive

I also support the idea of the extended cargo bay having a negative impact on the pitch, roll and yaw of any ship it is fitted to.

would extra weight impact performance out in space where there's no gravity?

Yes, mass (not weight) should have an impact.

In the case of the extended cargo bay, it is the effect of the extension on the mass of the ship and the also the ships flight dynamics. Ofc - this is probably more applicable to the newtonian flight model than the oolite "space ether" model, but as the latter is completely fictitious, you can come up with any explanation you like.

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

A nerve-ending is a nerve-ending is a nerve-ending ... and let's just say I don't have any trouble "forming attachments". :P
