Bouldersmash
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Yes, I'm planning to get to know the ore processor better. Gonna buy myself a big ship with plenty of cargo bay and the invite an ore processor over, go out for a meal and then go spend some time alone with my ore processor in an asteroid belt...............if you know what I mean.

So let me get this straight, a mining laser is a little redundant if you've got a thick bumper? But too fast and you go splat right?

I thought smashing asteroids with your ship was akin to using a convential laser i.e. it doesn't produce as many boulders or splinters, hence less good for mining?

No, Im pretty sure that there is one state, being mined, or not being mined, and shunting is the same as mining.
Of course you do damage the paintwork, and other pilots will laugh at you.

So in summary, sod mining lasers, buy an anaconda or kirin or similar large vessel.
Ram asteroid.

Not very high-tech. But effective.

Isn't that risky? How fast do you have to ram into them, too fast and you go boom right?

I've done it many times in my Griff Cobra 3. Well, I'll ram boulders, not full-on asteroids...

Asteroid ramming shouldn't make mining lasers redundant.
