ship-related plists for dummies?

Post by Zieman »

Hi!

I have some experience in 3D-modelling, and now I've started learning to use Wings3D, the obvious goal being making some ships for Oolite.

I think I've gathered enough info around the EliteWiki & these forums to get a model (mesh & texture) Oolite-ready.

But getting the ship in the game so I can check out how it looks feels a bit tricky...

Is anyone willing to write / has anyone already written a guide to idiots on how to see your creation in Oolite? If not that, then maybe barebones shipdata.plist and shipyard.plist -files where you replace "yourship" (or something like that) with your own model name in relevant places and then you can buy the ship for a nominal sum or the ship is spawned near you when you launch from a station?
...and keep it under lightspeed!

Have a look through this thread where someone else (Scarecrow) was doing something similar. It may give you some signposts as to how to go about things.

I would agree that this area of information could do with a little brushing up. I'll give it some thought, but I'm perhaps not the best person in the world to do it, although I do know how to and have done in the past (iyswim).

It also depends a little if "yourShip" is a player ship or an NPC one. The latter is much easier to make appear in the game, but of course does have the limitation that you can't fly it ;)

Didn't somebody make a kind of 'skeleton' OXP that you could plug things into to test? or am I mis-remembering?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Thanks Thargoid!

I did the buoy-trick found in the thread you pointed me to, just to check out the model. Now to UV map & create texture, then scripting...

Whee, first ship of my OXP is model- & texturewise ready.

Planned roles are: trader, pirate, naval scout & naval escort.

Trader ("Sunracer Scout") and both pirate versions will be available for purchase. Both navy versions look alike and are NPC-only.

You just should know that there is no such role as "naval scout" in Oolite. Which means that if you want it to behave specially, different from the behaviour of a trader, hunter, police, or escort, you have to program its AI yourself.
