Re: IRC channels
Ubuntu 7.10 FF3.0.11 - when I click either link I get invited to pick an application to open a "purple-url-handler"_ds_ wrote:We now have two IRC channels on OFTC:All are welcome to join, lurk, run away or whatever

To open those channels, you need to use an irc client. I suppose you could install pidgin, whose libpurple engine is probably what that purple-url-handler is referring to...
Hey, free OXPs: farsun v1.05 & tty v0.5! :0)

So, is that the app I pick when Ubuntu asks me to select an application?
The wording reminded me of this:

I'm happy with Pidgen I just wanted to know if this was a suitable app - and why, pray tell, are the urls "purple"?_ds_ wrote:If you like. Or you could install some other client. Up to youDaddyHoggy wrote:I already use Pidgin IM to chat to my friends who use MSN...

DH.. since you probably already use Firefox.. you could get the ChatZilla addon for FF..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
purple urls: pretty colour!
Or go for the somewhat disappointing 'official version' under the naming dispute heading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin_%28software%29
And the pidgin pigeon is purple too. Coincidence? I think not!

Hey, thanks! it's more like what I wanted to do the first time around.. a_c sent me a zip of all the pics in the screensaver he made, and there were a good number of suitable shots in it.. (and playing with the GIMP is fun! -- gee.. that just sounds so wrong.. ) I'd like to include more of Simon B's neolite ships, but most of the pics posted of them are too... *cough* boring *cough* too much like something out of a Jane's All The Ooniverse's Starcraft book..
(If anybody has some good screenshots of Neolite ships in action (preferably taken with the HUD turned off) I'd love to see them for inclusion in a new version. Not to mention that the screenshots thread needs more Neolite ships in it anyway!)

There's a couple in the pdf of Lazarus...
I've got a link to Simon's photobucket folder - but he PM'ed it - so I think perhaps not for public disclosure - but I will click through them and see if I can find something less mundane and more for your liking!

@ Diziet Sma: But, to be completely honest, and without offense meant, in the long run I find it somewhat annoying. After all these boards are mainly about exchanging written thoughts, and reading posts. And I find big blinking pictures in every post distracting from that. I wouldn't want that every thread to which you contribute must get a "warning: screenshot heavy" message in its title.
My other issue is my unreliable internet connection: Because accessing and building any page in my browser takes at least five to ten seconds (seriously: we have a pure satellite connection for up and own traffic, so the only thing that happens instantly after clicking anything in a browser is--nothing; it is a little like a built-in pauseAI: 5.0 before any action), and completely displaying a page with about 100 elements takes roughly a minute, every additional element which is not necessary is essentially a pain in the neck. And images in signatures which may have to be loaded up to 15 times on a page (extreme case), are not really necessary.
Is there an option in phpBB which would allow me to disable the display of images in signatures?
<OT>
If there isn't a way to disable signatures (or images therein) in phpBB, you can always configure your browser to not display images automatically, or install an Adblockerpackage (For Firefox, check out Adblock Plus plugin) which you could then configure to block certain URLs - eg, Diziet's banner.
Personally I miss the days of newsgroups somewhat - one program to download all the newsgroups you're interested in, instead of having to browse to each individual board, maintain a login, etc. etc.
