getting this message during start-up:
_______________________________________

Oolite failed to startup, because an
unhandled exception occurred.

An exception of type NSInvalidArgumentException
occurred. If this problem persists, please file a bug
report.

At other times, loading a new Jameson, with no OXP's installed, I can get as far as launching - but never as far as the nav. buoy - before Oolite quits. Usually it quits before Jameson launches, though.

You may want to mention that you drive a Mac, too..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

It would also help to know which OS version, and if it's a PPC or intel.
Hey, free OXPs: farsun v1.05 & tty v0.5! :0)

oh, yes -- it's a ppc & similar probs with earlier versions (of Oolite)

Not bothered, coz prbly just need upgraded hardware.

OS X, 10.3.9 (10.5 better, but reverted to 10.3 for iLife '06)

will get 10.6 soon, anyway, this just was just a quick report. (this particular 10.3.9 = non standard, anyway)

cheers :)

I see(another thread named pelamis) you modified the pelamis shipdata.plist entry.. you also need to hold down shift while starting up Oolite when modifying the OXP data. just as a safe precaution, did you do that ?. Oolite should update its cache though, if you have moved everything out of the OXP folder...

but just as a safe precaution, did you do that ?

Please don’t say that.

If the game fails to load with an obscure message, that’s a bug in the game. If a particular plist or script causes the game to crash, that’s a bug in the game. Every bug that has any sort of useful context should be reported. Working around it or shrugging it off makes it impossible for us to fix the game.

well, I'm not sure where to look to see why message appeared, but if any pointers offered I'll certainly look there to see.

however all versions post 1.65 I've attempted to load have done the same thing (seen 1 or 2 other comments re. game crashes to desktop @ launch elsewhere) but this is the 1st error message I've seen; message had Oolite icon included in it, if that's any help?

P.S.

although I've never found any modifications I've made fail to manifest when starting game without SHIFT key depressed, yes: I did SHIFTstart game in all cases..

On windows they reside in

Oolite/Oolite.app/logs/latest.log

For mac i dont know, but should be similar, search the directory for latest.log

Since we have this question in two threads at the moment, I hereby declare it an FAQ:

Someone asked me for my log file. What is that, and where is it?

Logs in a mac are located in the LIBRARY folder

I looked there

This is a bit lengthy so I'll delete as much as possible

latest log last game was 1.65 which worked OK reads:
===== Display starts at offset 85976 within file of length 217048. ====
===== Use File->Reload (Cmd-R) to display more. ====

& so on for several hundred entries down to
[system]: *** -[NSCFString boolValue]: selector not recognized
[system]: *** Attempt to remove unrecognized exception handler 0xbfffd628

previous log previous game was 1.65 as well, but log might just be referring to crashes(?) and 1.65 has never crashed at start-up

in folder Documentation (nothing: folder empty)

install 1.73
start-up
select commander Jameson
f5 screen = 100 CR

f3/f3 screen gives ship value as 922335648997365475903762.3Cr
(The game crashed before I could copy any more than the first 5 digits, but it was a similarly gigantic sum)

game quits

Oolite Latest.log (immediately after 1.73 game quitting) reads:
===== Display starts at offset 3811849 within file of length 3942921. ====
===== Use File->Reload (Cmd-R) to display more. ====

[system]: *** -[NSCFString boolValue]: selector not recognized

I would mention that all versions of Oolite I've downloaded -- other than 1.65 -- have similarly crashed at launch from Lave as Commander Jameson, if not before.

With 1.73 the farthest I've got is to the Zaonce witchpoint buoy, today, in a newly purchased Adder.

The gigantic Cobra value (plus the 100Cr) has only appeared once.

There is a crash reporter in the logs folder (in the Library folder)

It gives a lengthy report, including the following:

OS Version: 10.3.9 (Build 7W98)
Report Version: 2

Command: Oolite
Path: /Applications/Oolite/Oolite.app/Contents/MacOS/Oolite
Version: Oolite version 1.73.0.1 (1.73.0.1)
PID: 426
Thread: 0

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000021

Neither of those logs are from 1.65 – it didn’t write log files.

I’d be very interested in getting both the full Latest.log and the crash log (e-mail: ahruman squiggle oolite point org).

This is what I will do:

1..remove 1.65 entirely

2..remove all OXP's entirely

3..install the 1.73.01 that I have here already downloaded

4..start up game & copy any crash reports (in full) viz Latest.log + Oolite.crash.log
