I wonder how many 'duds' they shot before reaching this quality, must've been a lot of trial and error...

Indeed.
I've done something like this a long time ago with a kids toy and a laser pointer but my camera had a max exposure time of 10s. Still looked pretty fine though.

Lengthy exposure times and perhaps also multiple exposures combined with photo editing software.
Photography magazines cover these techniques from time to time.

According to the article I linked, the images there have never been touched by image editing software...
That's even more impressive...
