So the bottom line for me is:

Trumbles are not removable by script (neither legacy nor Javascript), so pestcontrol.oxp isn't possible and has starved before being born.

Have I got this right?

Sounds about right, at least at the moment.

Two fixes:
Don’t add an EQ_TRUMBLE to the equipment list if “awardEquipment: EQ_TRUMBLE” is called when there is already a trumble infection; just do nothing.
Delete EQ_TRUMBLE from equipment list on loading, to mend saved games broken by this bug.
I would prefer an other fix: Always put the EQ_TRUMBLE in the list on starting the infection and always remove this on ending of the infection. This way it is also possible for a script to see if there is an active infection.

Perhaps, but the current way to do that (works in 1.70) is to check if player.trumbleCount > 0.

crud.
This whole 'trumbles are not equipment really, but we are calling it so anyway' treatment is ruining my plans for trumble pushing. :(

Pretty please fix it Ahruman.

I got those Trumbles. But once they started multiplying, i didn't know what to do so I deleted them from the save file. Sure saves a lot of time than cooking them on a sun.

well its fair enough on this one isnt it

the tribbles or whatever- well they come along for no good reason, and they seriously sod up the game for you - and there's no clue how to get rid of them.

and no ones gonna think out the solution for themselves

us who used to use the c64 version have an advantage - but thats it

Hi phonebook

Yes there is a clue and yes many of us figured it out for ourselves.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

easy to think it up for yourself if zzap in its review all those years ago passed on the secret of how you might come by them

Hi PH

Actually, I didn't have "zzap" (whatever that is, some mag I presume).
No spoilers at all.

I didn't even have an Elite manual - just hours/days/weeks in the Cobra, trying out everything that came to mind. Ahh, the joy of it. That's why I love Oolite, as it's still got that magic. You can OXP it to your hearts content (if you wish to) but that core remains.
This forum is pretty good, as well. I wonder what the "other" side of Riedquat is like!

Play as you wish to play, my friend, but most of all...enjoy.

Regards

I think we would count the YAH ads that talk about lave fried trumble hints...
I shot him back first. That is to say, I read his mind and fired before he would have fired on me. No, sir, he wasn't a fugitive.

the tribbles
wrong show, but almost, as Trumbles was indeed inspired by the star trek episode that featured tribbels. In the end they where all beamed aboard a klingon D7 battle cruiser.

I guees alot of them got fried by disrupter fire

Originally by the time trumbles became a problem, you would be regularly scooping fuel anyhow to avoid police (collecting fuel) or collecting bounty from sunrunners.
In vanilla oolite the wp-sun route is a bit boring compared to the original Elite though and fuelscooping much more dangerous.
Anyhow, those that paid attention would notice the trumbles behaving oddly when the cabin temperature got high.

The most common final solution to trumble infestation also was diving into the sun and ejecting. . . that final step would screw you over obviously.
I seem to remember getting a hint to do just that, not from the game but maybe from a sadistic elite commander.
Doing this several times, even a grounder would notice the trumbles' discomfort eventually.
