Just encountered one...
Who came up with this - good one! Looked through the forum and the Wiki and it seems to be one of those that was just around in pre-Wiki days, no other clues as to history, not even comments in the plists...
I have a sneaking suspicion what the inspiration was, although the Longshot actually seems to look like a related ship in later novels. Wasn't sure until I flew around it and saw the hyperdrive spine sticking out. It's given me an idea for a Redux, which would automatically come with fuel scoops, the interstellar fuel recharge, extra shields and heat shields, and would also come in a militarised Feline version. The hull should be transparent - there's a challenge!
If it is what I think it is then it should have a seriously uprated hyperdrive on board but the price should be almost unachievable. I might have a go at a mission OXP which rewards it as a prize instead...
So anyone know where THIS Longshot came from and any thoughts on the above?

The Longshot was made by a guy who called himself Laton. The original submission to Oosat 2 (our twice-defunct old OXP-centre) can be found under http://oldsat.alioth.net/node/109
And as far as increased Hyperspace capability is concerned: The 7-LY range is hardcoded, and for a good reason. It would alter the game too much to increase it for the player. (E.g. the Longway mission would become useless at once.) What you can do is give a ship more fuel than for 7 LY. But the only result would be an increased injector use.

I realise the 7 ly thing has to stay, so I think this idea is more "inspired by the books" rather than outright copied... which is still fertile ground!
There are halfway stops between worlds with forced misjumps
sometimes, and at many places, worlds out of bounds from a certain system. can come within the 7 ly range using forced misjumps.
you should be able to stay alive long enough to set a new coordinate and have the count down run out...
now here is the interesting part.---,
try two consecutive mis-jumps, and you likely end up where no one have ever been before... apart from the all present thargoids
and with the new galaxy coordinates accessible via JavaScript, you can now hide all sort of things from the casual gamer, until he

You'll always end up halfway between your current position and your destination, whatever your current position will be. I've done that quite often, a couple of consecutive misjumps between two close systems, if I felt like Thargoid-bashing. (And that was back in the days before all this fancy refueling equipment even existed. Therefore the two systems had to be quite close in order to allow for a couple of misjumps without running out of fuel and being stuck forever.)try two consecutive mis-jumps, and you likely end up where no one have ever been before... apart from the all present thargoids
