Massive bump for this topic eh?

As a relative newcomer to this superb game I am troubled by it's silly (IMHO) name. Whenever I talk to anyone about it I have to spell it out and offer up two or three pronunciations, all of which seem equally daft. It also looks like open office lite!

To the powers-that-be, please, please, please, change it's name to something else! Please?
No.

Not that I'm a power that be!
Indeed the OOniverse just wouldnt be the same without all the "oo" names in various oxp added items, which in some ways recaptures the humour of edible arts graduates that was sorely lacking in the actual elite sequels.
As DaddyHoggy I have a number of Commisions for Ad-X bringing to potential customers attention the delights of a number of unOosual companies...

I wouldn't know what to do with myself otherwise.

Yes the object oriented, leet, blah blah, geekiness is all well and good. Trouble is some of the OXP puns seem to be inconsistent with 'oo' replacing 'oo' AND 'o' sounds.

(I wonder if Tesco would be any more likely to sue than Braben....)

One of my OOlite spells coincided with watching the highlander TV series and I just couldnt hear the "princes of the universe" theme song without thinking "princes of the ooniverse"

Given that Franchises chequered history an Oolite tie in probably wouldnt be impossible, pehaps Roory Mcleod vs the Thargoid Immortals somewhere in Witch space...

The review in MacWorld
http://www.macworld.co.uk/macsoftware/r ... iewid=2154
says:

"Oolite (Object Oriented Elite) is as addictive and compelling today as Elite was in 1984."

The first time I saw the word I thought it was related to oolith which made me think of monolith and 2001. Strange.

EDIT Ooniverse suggests oolite, Tescoo suggests ohlite. Still it's better than Quack. Sorry, Quake.

Tesc-oo/Tesc-oh - depends where in the world (or even UK) you're based - after all people from Bristol pronounce "Asda" as "Az-dal"

I assumed it was oo-oh-lite, same as the geological term and many other words from the same Greek root meaning "egg-shaped."

But I am only an egg myself and have not grokked it in fullness...

I assumed it was 'oooo-leet' as in "oooh - I've just discovered this wicked remake of elite - leet"

now I just say 'uh-leet', sort of like 'elite', but not quite.

my wife says 'that game'

:)

Are you sure it's not 'that *expletive deleted* game'?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
