Witch Space
Hi All,
I just got cought in witch space without enough fuel to get to the nearest system. Is there any way out of this situation without re-booting the game?

Not for the moment...that pilot is stuck in empty space.Alex wrote:Hi All,

However, for the future you may want to
1) carry a pylon mounted fuel pod to escape on your own
2) buy the fuel collector and have the pilot fly an hour or so unattended until it scooped up enough fuel
3) install the thargoid and navy packages - then the navy will be there, fighting the thargoids in witchspace, and the navy will come with carriers. You can either use the wormholes of the navy ships to escape or even dock on one and wait until it made it's way back to a planet.

That's the third time in a week this request is made, so it means it is quite important. Thankfully, in the next release you will be able to restart a game mid-flight and load a commander as soon as you reappear on Lave.Alex wrote:I was just thinking maybe there should be a way to access the quick save/load commander screen? Can you do that from inside pause?
Was that a wise thing to say around here?another_commander wrote:That's the third time in a week this request is made, so it means it is quite important.
Ponders old wise saying about the difference between quantity and quality.

Well, concerning forum history, it may be a bold thing to say, and a thing that might create even more work for the devs of this game (of which as I understand they already have quite enough on their hands without great ideas of "how to do it better") - but, it also shows that the guys developing Oolite also do care about what the players of future Oolite actually want, without resort to dogmatic ideas, and that is, imho, a pretty good thing.Thargoid wrote:Was that a wise thing to say around here?another_commander wrote:That's the third time in a week this request is made, so it means it is quite important.
So far my 0.2 Cr (and remind me of what I wrote above when I come along with the next grandious idea of how to do it better )

I'm not sure that I'd want to be able to re-load commander in flight or during witch space "events"
A bit like climbing a coconut tree without the possibility of falling out - not that I'd want to fall out, but the possibility improves the taste of the coconuts - similarly with THARGOID EVIL TACTIC wrenching an innocent into the abyss of witchspace: it might well be fatal; I'm sure their ill intent is exactly that!
My aim is not to preserve flying Octogons. So why should I be preserved?
If my strategy works it's BYE BYE THARGOID - I don't want them popping up again
If their strategy works (and I'm stuck in the void or atomised) it's BYE BYE COMMANDER - why should I pop up again

Well, nothing would require you to reload while in flight, so I don't see a problem here.
There are many people for whom being able to reload while in flight is a convenience. If you do a lot of testing, you may have to do so on a regular basis.
In addition, the devs aren't providing a reload feature directly. Instead you have to start a new game, then load.
If you don't like the idea, you don't have to use it.

It never happened to you that you ran out of fuel after killing all thargoids? Because in that case you are stuck.Zbond-Zbond wrote:I'm not sure that I'd want to be able to re-load commander in flight or during witch space "events"
You can leave on your computer running for hours without progress. It is not even possible to kill the commander in witchspace to force a reload. The only solution is a reload of a old commander. But that was only possible by quitting Oolite.

Yes it has and other horribles, too.
..but the point is to avoid that happening, via the experience of it having happened, so that I can emerge triumphant next time
However, whether prepared to the hilt with gal-HyperDrives or escape pods (which don't work in witchspace, I have learned!!!!!) or flying on fumes, I enjoy whatever the game throws at me, and am not complaining or disparaging.
I preferred being able to migrate, via gal-HyperDrive, to the isolated regions in Galaxies3,6,7,8 -- although being stuck at Oresrati = severe pain of course -- I wonder who lives there?
But if an extra gal-Hyperdrive were available (e.g. as a 2nd hand item at a salvage yard or something; maybe it is? - I haven't seen one).... ....

Try playing Cataclysm.oxp. At some point in the mission the equipment you want comes for sale.Zbond-Zbond wrote:I preferred being able to migrate, via gal-HyperDrive, to the isolated regions in Galaxies3,6,7,8 -- although being stuck at Oresrati = severe pain of course -- I wonder who lives there?

Same for OSE, although that one is much more costly. OSE does something to Oresrati, so it might be a little bit less painful to go thereEric Walch wrote:Try playing Cataclysm.oxp.
