The new laptop has arrived!

Post by DaddyHoggy »

Typing this on my new Work Demo rig - Dell XPS M1730 - 6GB RAM, Dual SLI 512MB GF9800M - Oolite is smooth as you like! Default res is 1900x1200 and the screen is huge! Is Oolite limited to c. 60fps? (which is also the refresh rate of the LCD)

The PSU is the size of a house brick and outputs 230W - in fact it is best to consider the battery pack more as a UPS as it only lasts (from fully charged) 20 Mins if you're hammering both gfx cards and the CPU. I'm also going to have to get more muscles to lug it all around though - it comes in at around the 6kg mark!

Trying to get used to Vista (so we can use DX10 in our tech demos and have access to the 6GB of RAM) it's not very nice is it? Or is that just me?

We're eagerly awaiting Windows 7 - we've been playing with the Beta Release Candidate for a few months - so hopefully Vista will be a temporary and transitory blip...

No, it's definitely not limited to 60 fps. I've got my driver set to that limit and I do also get less fps in certain situations, however I've seen boosts up to over 200fps when the driver wasn't fast enough to slow things down ;)

Turned off the Vsync - now it runs at a completely unwavering 100fps no matter (so far) what's on the screen.

If you've got a commander which has the Geteve mission from assassins active, go there! ;)

I don't (I don't even have assasins installed!) - but I am intrigued...

I finally got round to putting in some of Griff's ships - I saw my first Griff Krait - OMG! It was just so 8) x10!!! :D

So you're running trunk on it?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

No, not running the trunk - I'm running the "original" :?: :!: Griff Krait - the one that doesn't actually much look like a Krait but is a fabulous looking ship - I'm really looking forward to the Trunk becoming the next release...

Yeah, I know the one.... one cool and at the same time deadly looking piece of work, ain't she??? I'm hanging on the release myself.. but not holding my breath, good things take time...

(Man, with a 8) new toy like that, ya gotta give trunk a try sometime.. it ain't that hard to do really, and man is it worth it...</drool>)

I'm out now this weekend to get a new graphics card, 1,73 deserves it, I think..

If you ask me, build it and give it a try! The build process is very easy now and my impression is that the trunk build is more stable than 1.72.2, when combined with OXPs.

My thoughts from the past days are to find the time for some heavy playtesting and if it still runs this well as it did already, then suggest to make a new official test release from the trunk build.

When the machine is cleared of unnecessary partitions (Dell's Media Centre and the default refresh position) and V Home P is replaced with Vista Business (we use domains at work - and Home Premium doesn't do Domains) and RL(tm) stops getting in the way (I've got my NATO report to finish) then I will give the Trunk a whirl and stuff it full of lovely lovely OXPs!!!
