Strange Occurence

Post by Master Bates »

I've recently started a new game of Oolite (with many, many OXPs installed, of course), and am taking baby steps towards getting back into the game. I'm pretty out of practice, so the going is kinda slow. Anyway, at the moment I'm doing a fairly profitable routine involving ferrying computers from Leesti to Riedquat and then taking food and booze back, augmenting my income by buying gemstones everywhere I can and selling them en masse to the casino orbiting Leesti. I was heading from Leesti High to the casino when something wierd happened - an Imperial Courier started attacking me, having seemingly materialized out of nowhere (although I probably just hadn't noticed it). This isn't strange in and of itself; I was carrying a lot of valuable cargo. What's strange about it is that I was in a station safe zone - an extremely crowded station safe zone, with dozens of witnesses including not one but five police and navy vessels of various classes! Needless to say, with the assistance of the cops I made short work of him, successfully scooping his escape pod, blowing up his derelict ship and salvaging his cargo. Maybe that'll teach him to stick to deep space.

I also noticed one other odd thing, which is probably a bug - it's proven impossible to dock with the station orbiting Riedquat without docking computers; my vessel explodes. The same thing happens to any NPC ships that try to dock there. It seems to be because the docking thingy and the opening for it are oriented at right angles to each other.

About the first encounter I may suggest that, well, real world is full of weirdos, so why can't one appear in the Ooniverse? Maybe, he had a bad day, or read Drew's novellas and decided to become cool assasin :-D
Besides, it's pretty easy with scripts to make couple dozen of pirates appear near station, so this is not unusual.

I had the second one too, and also it has been discussed before, you may try searching the boards to find which station has this problem (or maybe someone could tell right away), I don't remember exactly what station it was.

Yeah, he was probably just some random crazy who stole a fully-kitted ship (he wasn't very good with it), although the capture bounty was pretty high. And I think the station at Riedquat is called a 'Raceedat Station' or something like that. I have no clue which OXP put it there, but it's making my life miserable. I never really bothered with docking computers before, but now I have to have them in order to dock in some systems.

See this thread, it's about Raceedat from Trident Down OXP.

Thanks. I was using an old version of Trident Down; downloading the latest version got rid of the station, replacing it with a normal Coriolis that it's actually possible to dock with.

From time to time some pirate gang (or even single ones) decide to dare it. Typically pretty suicidal ;)

If you install the black monks oxp, you will see pretty often that a clean monk ship tries to attack a clean trader - whoever scores the first hit will be offender then.

The Tigers sometimes don't wait for the player to leave the safety zone.

Assassins oxp also has a number of occurrences where ships wait for the launching player to shoot him down.

With the proper OXPs, even thargoid cruisers and battleships may attack the station if you dock!

Thus the zone is providing some safety, but the reason that it's set up and police waiting docked at the station is that the zone is far from all-time peaceful.

Concerning your Raceedat-Problem, if you ever visit the pulsar, you might run into a similar situation with the observation station there! As the docking computer tells, it's necessary to rotate by 90degrees before attempting to dock due to the orientation problem of the docking bay.

If you have old oxp's with the behemoth ships, you may also encounter one type of them where the bay is mounted with the wrong orientation.

Sometimes it just looks as if those ships come frome Ikea and the builders had trouble to properly assemble the parts ;)

Yeah, I've seen that happen a few times, and lost a perfectly good ship once or twice because I tried to help the deadbeat out. Those Monks are badass.
