Tianve Movie
After following the thread on using CamStudio to capture movies from Oolite I thought I'd have a go.
So here's my first attempt.

Awesome!
I liked the well-timed camera angle changes, and the scene with Rebecca Weston was neat, too... Although... with a bank balance of 10 million credits, I'd have thought you would have fitted out the Cobby with a bit more gear..
I noticed a couple of edits in there as well... what program did you use for that?
I must remember to try landing on the Pulsar, next time I'm in that neighbourhood... should be fun, with it spinning like that!
Edit to add:
Watch it in HQ mode folks, it's much clearer!

For others wanting to give CamStudio a try...
Some suggested settings at the CamStudio Forum for capturing full-screen gaming are:
Also, if you go to YouTube and search on the word 'camstudio' you will find lots of tutorials and recommendations for settings.
Some suggested settings at the CamStudio Forum for capturing full-screen gaming are:
Note that this assumes you also have DivX installed.. (worthwhile anyway) and I can also state from my own experience that 1024x768 will also give you a HD option. Rather than setting a region, you can also choose 'Fullscreen'.## VIDEO OPTIONS ##
Video Codec: DivX
Quality: 85%
Keyframes: Every 120 frames
Capture Frames Every: 33 milliseconds
Frame Rate: 30 frames/second
AutoAdjust: Unchecked
[CONFIGURE]
Certification Profile: 1080HD
Speed Preset: 1
Rate Control: 1-pass, 6000kbps
(everything else as default)
## AUDIO OPTIONS ##
Recording Format: 22.05 kHz, mono, 16-bit
Compressed Format: PCM
Interleave: Every 100 milliseconds
MCI Recording unchecked
* If you still have a/v desych, then check MCI (remember all other audio options will be overridden)
Dimensions of Recording (Region)
I need to experiment more with this, but
640 x 480
960 x 720
and
1280 x 960
should all give you either HD or HQ options on YouTube
But know that the larger the dimensions, the larger the final filesize.

For people running linux - the desktop recorder of choice is recordmydesktop
In Ubuntu (Debian etc):
sudo apt-get install recordmydesktop gtk-recordmydesktop
You run it from the audio-video menu, the gui lets you pick a window to record, click the box in the systray to stop it. In encodes to the royalty-free ogg/theora format. If you need an flv or other format - mencoder or similar will transcode for you.
Click-through the advanced options - disable the cursor for eg and you won't get that mouse-pointer in the shot ;)
I'm looking at getting a movie of the neolite edition made...

Another possibly useful tool for video capture with Linux is Yukon. I'd just got it (and its dependant libraries) installed onto my Kubuntu box and was about to start playing with it, when a kernel upgrade went haywire, which I haven't had time to sort out yet, so I can't say how good or otherwise it is. However, it certainly isn't anywhere near the user-ready state that recordmydesktop is, so I'd suggest that only those who love tinkering under the hood ought to give it a go.
