Hi From the new guy & Problems

Post by mr_wigster »

Hi guys & girls,

I've been addicted to Elite since I first discovered it in 1987. Oolite is a vast improvement, with all the packs available, so I have been enjoying this since last summer. :D

I have two problems though and couldn't find answers elsewhere on here - I wonder if you can shed some light on these?

I can't remember which version I am running, tried right-clicking on the icon, but it still doesn't say. I assume it's 1.65 though. Is there any way I can tell for definate?

Also, I have downloaded several OXPs and found these great, but the Galactic Navy one won't run and quotes an error on the opening screen (with the rotating Cobra Mk3), saying:-
(Nil) 'Galactic_Navy.oxp' requirements property list could not be parsed.

Does anyone know what this means and what I need to do to make it run? I have the Behemoth OXP already uploaded, so I don't think this is the problem.

I'm not in the least technical minded, so please could you make any answers basic.

Many Thanx,

Wigster.

I'm not 100% of this, but I think this is what you get if the requires.plist in the OXP is set up for a higher version of Oolite than the one you are trying to run it on.

Basically the OXP is telling you that it was written for a later version of Oolite than the one you have installed, so is being disabled as it won't work properly on the version of Oolite you have. The error is harmless (Oolite is just telling you - cant run this OXP so I'm not going to), but you might want to update to the latest (1.72.2) test version of Oolite if you want to run all OXPs.

When run in a window, the Version Number of Oolite is shown on the bar of the window, so you should be able to check the version of Oolite you have that way.

Welcome back to the addiction!
OXPS : The Assassins Guild, Asteroid Storm, The Bank of the Black Monks, Random Hits, The Galactic Almanac, Renegade Pirates can be downloaded from the Elite Wiki here.

I wil assume that you are running on Windows or Linux. On Mac the below may not apply:

If you run Oolite on a window and the title bar says "SDL_app", then you must be on v1.65. In such case, updating to v1.72.2, downloadable from https://developer.berlios.de/project/sh ... up_id=3577 is strongly recommended.

Hi Mr Wigster, and welcome to the friendliest forum this side of Riedquat!!

...no really, we are! Even when we disagree about something we are polite to one another!

As to the version you are running; if you are using a Mac, run the program in windowed mode and go up to the top bar and click on 'Oolite', then click on 'About Oolite', it will display the version.

I must repeat the advice above - do use the latest version, you will find it has come a long way since 1.65!
Very funny, Scotty, now beam down my clothes...

Hi Everyone and thanx for the warm welcome. Not even Leesti is this friendly to a fellow trader/bountry hunter. Hopefully, in time, I'll be able to share some help & advice back the other way. 8)

I've checked my version and it says SDLapp at the top of the screen, so I guess this is 1.65 then? If I upgrade to 1.72.2, can I still use my same save file? (I've come too far to start again. lol). If I use the link, will it just upgrade the game file and leave all the OXPs I've downloaded alone?

I do really want the improvements of the later version, just don't want to lose my progress so far.

Thanx again for all the feedback so far. :D

Forgot to mention - I am running this on a PC, not a MAC.

Cheers,

Save games are compatible yes, no worries there.

To be sure, if you look under the oolite folder you should see one called AddOns (where the OXPs are installed) and one called oolite.app. In that folder is a sub-folder called oolite-saves, which has all the save games in it. Just move those two and their contents somewhere safe, then uninstall 1.65, install 1.72.2 and put the folders back in the same place in the new tree.

It's better to uninstall 1.65 before installing 1.72.2 rather than overwriting, as that can cause some problems occasionally. The uninstall should actually leave the above folders untouched, but personally I prefer to be safe.

Oh, and allow me to add an alien welcome too ;)

on a mac you have a couple of options:
- when you're running oolite, select "about oolite" from the oolite menu
- single-click the icon, then right-click (or control-click) it and select "get info" from the pop-up menu
MacBook pro, OSX 10.8.5, Xcode 5

Hi Mr Wigster
Welcome to the Ooniverse.
I found it real handy to create a new folder called oolite extras, I store all my oxp's and older save games in here. makes it very handy to chop and change your game. And a good back up if something drastic goes wrong with the game prog, Not that it ever has. Also makes it easy to upgade the basic prog.
They wizz kids writing the game are always tweaking it and coming out with better versions, I'm sure it wont be very long before we see 1.72.3 or 4 for that matter.

Happy hunting

Hi Wigster, and welcome...

Since you're using a PC, are you running XP or Vista? It makes a big difference when it comes to where you should install the game. If Vista, stay away from the ProgramFiles folder, and install it to C:\Oolite\ or C:\Games\Oolite\ to avoid problems caused by Vista's Virtual Folder system.

Do know that installing to "(any Drive other than %SystemDrive%):\Program Files\" does not invoke virtual folders and will work fine. This is how my system runs. I have %SystemDrive% set as C: like most folks. I have Oolite running from D:\Program Files\ without incident. Just FYI.

Be careful with questions like that. Some of us will answer "no"…

Yeah, you'd think, since I run Oolite on both XP and Kubuntu, that I'd know better..

When Wigster said he had a PC, I guess I figured he'd have mentioned Linux in the same breath, if that was what he was running...
