What about a sort of extension OXP for Planetfall, namely Planet Specific product.oxp. In the main city you can go to the market/bazaar/trade center and buy products that are not in the normal market. Each planet have a planet specific product that is sells and they also need specific products form other planets.
To give an example out of my Famous Planets 2.0 OXP:
The Planets Reinen is famous for its beerfesten. So what if you are able to buy a certain amount Reinen beer that. The oxp then generates a random 'need for beer' on one or more of the other 255 planets.
You then get the following choices (for example):
-Planet Lave plans to organize a plilot party and needs 25 tons of Reinen Beer within ...days..hrs.. and will pay
- Diso Prime needs 10 tons of Reinen beer within...days.hrs...
Also Reinen asks for certain imports to make the beer like grains or hops
- Reinen Beer ltd needs grains. can you get it from planet ...?
We'il pay you... on arrival.
If we generate 256 new products then you have a lot of new trading opportunities. I suggest to try it out in galaxy 1 first..
Any ideas or comments?

A long time ago (not long after I first joined) I suggested something similar - I think I suggested occasionally that rather than just generic "computers" or "machinery" or "food" - you bought "DX-99-4S Navigational Array subsystems" or "Heostat Inc Grain Extraction Facilities" or "Cajun Spiced Edible Poets in a Lethal Brandy Jus" - that need shipping from one system to another - bought at a premium but sold at one too. I think I may have mentioned the potential for occasional import and export licenses too (even more "equipment" for the equipment list!)

I know that this sort of idea was mentioned earlier. Perhaps have an (optional) tag behind items you buy? As in, instead of 20 tonnes food, it's 20 tonnes edible poets, but still classed as food.
So if you have a special market for a specific type of food, you can make a decent profit. However, you could still sell the edible poets as generic food anywhere else.
This would also make the cargo missions more difficult = currently you can get a mission to deliver X tonnes of something to somewhere, but on the way you can sell some, buy some, etc. as long as you have enough when you arrive at the target system. If you have sub-classed items, you'd have to specifically deliver those X tonnes.
A complication is that you could have a mixture of various different types of top-category items in your hold, so the hold display needs revamping. Perhaps leave the overview screen as-is, but selecting 'food' would bring up a break-down of what kinds of food you have. When selling, you can either sell the top-level category (food) or specifically select a sub-category (edible poets) to sell.
Then you could have one type of product available at the main station, eg Xeenerian Grain, and, with the PlanetFall OXP, on the planet Xeenerian Grain-fed Evil Donkey Meat with it's target market.
Could possibly also affect the price slightly - the further away an item comes from the more valuable it is.

Based on the planet Guide (see the .pdf file in the documentation subdirectory) of the Famous Planets 2 OXP I give an example list of the first 2 planets.
Anerbe: Exports: Grain, Hops, Needs Air filters, Faming equipment
Aona: Exports: Aonian Lethal Brandy, Needs Hops, Grains, Alcohol,Chemicals
The list could go on till all 256 planets have an major import or export.
