ok tell me about oxps then....

Post by Rebecca »

i think i understand how these work and its time to add some bits into my game.... had a look on the wiki ....

.,...but there are a lot!

- can you suggest a basic set of oxps i could start with? i havent got a great ship yet... been doing trading runs in a python with a beam laser and an extra cargo bay... slowly getting richer.

Random Hits! They come with missions of different difficulty levels, very funny descriptions and you can keep trading while flying towards your destination planet! You will require an ECM and fuel injectors before starting them, though.

UPS Courier might add some fun and possibilities to earn some money while performing other tasks.

For missions, in general, I suggest to have a look at the wiki and decide which descriptions (and place of action) matches your profile:

If you want fun with pirates outside the trading lanes, I suggest Deep Space Pirates, it's more like the old elite experience with that oxp!

Random Hits won't run on my iMac
(well I don't think it will, which isn't necessarily the same thing!)
ANARCHIES = great fun, provided you avoid running contraband
Anarchies 1dot0

-> hang on; I'll just check what others I have......

-> back again.

MISSILES & BOMBS quite a plus
Missiles and Bombs v0.5

BEHEMOTH also adds something, as does ROCK HERMIT LOCATOR
behemoth.oxp
Rock_Hermit_Locator1.1.oxp

Currently working through DEPOSED (a series of missions)
deposed1.3.3.oxp

I had also installed GRITTY CORIOLIS, which is visually good, but requires greater distance from station for hyperdrive to kick in (you need to be approx. 10Km from station instead of <7Km) which is a bit of a drag in your Python -- well I think it is: zoom [press "H"] BANG is my policy with a Qmine to say thank-you, when necessary.
It is sometimes necessary.
But Python is good. PYTHON CLASS CRUISER is an OXP ship which gives improved cargo capacity and nimble zippiness at a reasonable upgrade price.
Python Class Cruiser 2.6.oxp
Very tasteful paint job. Classy.

It depends somewhat on what you want the OXPs for. There are some for eye-candy, some for missions, some for new equipment & HUDs, some for new ships and some for useful stations and other such system items, or indeed to change how the game looks/feels/plays. And of course some that do multiple of the above.

So if you can be a little more specific about what you're interested in, some better recommendations can be made (although the above have some good advice anyway).

Also what galaxy are you currently in, and what's your rank & kill count?

I really suggest that you give it a try! It does add the space bar with it's surroundings, much going on there, very nice job, but I never noticed that it would require too much resources. I've the ATI troubles, my 4870x2 is currently on it's way to the vendor to be exchanged for a GTX295. The 4870x2 was exactly as slow as the X1550 backup card I'm using right now, it does use the slow computer RAM for rendering, but it got no problems with Random Hits. The missions from Random Hits usually are in other systems and just add a few ships, so no lag to be expected there!

However, IIRC Random Hits does require the 1.72.2 test release to be installed, but I'd always suggest to use that version instead of the last stable release. The 1.72.2 is behaving much better than any commercial game I know!

You definitely need "cargo_wreck_teaser" and "asteroid storm". The first adds a lot of barrel types to the system for more variation. The second adds a lot of new asteroid types for variation. Asteroid storm also contains a small mission.

UPS-courier was already mentioned. It mostly offers you some easy transport jobs and sometimes a more interesting job.

When your combat skill rises you want an oxp that adds more pirates to the system to increase your shooting practise and kill rate. In the past I used pirate cove for this. Now you can also use "deep space pirates" for this. You probably need injectors for this kind of stuff to flee when things start to get bad.

I'm still flying a reasonably fresh Commander in a Cobby3 and find the following set doesn't make life too difficult, merely more interesting:

Apart from the missions already mentioned, I like the OXPs which flavour the various government types:
Anarchies 2.1, Commies , Dictators 1.3.
Although these change the game and make things in some respects harder (and in others easier) I find it's still fairly well balanced.

More flavour comes through the Hoopy Casino, UPS Couriers, Generation Ships, Deep Space Dredgers, Missionaries, Buy Repair, Asteroid Storm, Random Hits, and Transports.

For eyecandy, in Galaxy 1 I like the Famous Planets, Lave, Lave Academy, Diso, the Tianve Pulsar (gives a good excuse to head to that Quadrant), the Tionisla Graveyard, Sungs Textures, Taranis HQ, and a couple others.

More traffic is through Deep Space Pirates and Sunskimmers.

I also like the Ore Processor as that makes mining much more profitable.

Personally I've so far kept away from OXPs which install ships which I find are out of balance (too powerful) from the initial game, so no super cobras or military/thargoid carriers and so on.

Ultimately, download all the ones which sound interesting and try them out. You'll end up with your own personalised set which tweaks the game to your liking.
The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

wow thanks all!

i think a mix of eye candy and missions to start with...

got the ecm and the fuel injectors now and know how to use them. my rating is 'offender' now... which seems to have kept the cops at bay!!

generation ships and stuff... they were in the elite manual weren't they?... i seem to remember.. and the tionisla graveyard.... that rings a bell to...

upscourier sounds like my sort of thing.. trying to be good at the moment!

famous planets looks good though.. does it really look like that in the game? the planets look a bit well plasticiny at the moment (dont take offence!!!!) - one was pink!!!!

FP makes a select number of planets in Galaxy 1 look much nicer. But if you want more general planet-painting, I would certainly recommend System Redux. It also adds additional planets/moons to most systems for you to crash into admire (or land on if you've got Planetfall installed too).

On a purely self promotional aspect, in that case I'd say Lave Academy, Planetfall (plus any of it's add-ons that you fancy), Welcome Mat, Fuel Station and Traffic Control (all from the link in my sig, plus several others). Also Pods if you want to compliment Cargo & Wrecks with even more variations and possibilities.

Aside from those, I'd say System Redux, Long Way Around, fuel collector, PAGroove Stations, anything done by Griff, Ionics and Scourge of the Black Baron.

Famous planets is great, it only gives a bit trouble with my configuration...but that's because of bad drivers and now a very low end graphics card (much like on-board chipsets which use the motherboards RAM).

The pink planet...maybe that was the source of the barbie cobra someone did post a screenshot of ;)
