just wanted to say.... really nice forum!! well done

Post by Rebecca »

been here a little while and just wanted to say thanks a lot...

ive been on a few game forums and usual get one of three predictable reactions

1 oh its a girl fire loads of personal sexist questions at her and dont take anything she says seriously
2 accuse me of not being a girl at all
3 no girls allowed here buggger off

none of that on here - a real breath of fresh air.... i know its a bit unusual to be female and like playing computer games but i do and thats that

so thanks all!!!!

Some things are so stupid that they hurt in my head.

This here is the most friendly board this side of Riedquat, usually at least, whatever sex you are from.

Though the women : men ratio here is definitely leaning massively in the direction of more men - don't know why. My girlfriend, who also is very much into computer gaming, simply can't be interested in this great game :(

I'm really curious about this rarer female interest into technology, real or gamey, and where it comes from?

Welcome again to the boards 8)

I believe it's mostly the parental education which says a woman shouldn't do it. When I did study computer science, we had only about 5% women...and guess, those who did dare to study it usually were in the upper part of understanding things, as if all the others just had been too frightened to do it.

In the company where I did work until burnout, we had a woman who was very good at what she did...she didn't study computer science because she was afraid to do so...if she had done it, I bet she'd been able to do quite some wonders there.

I've fixed computer troubles for many females - and those were not unwilling to learn the things, they usually just did not have spent so much time in order to know all that was necessary, and only came to computers after leaving their parents.

However, I did notice that fewer women were playing...usually also not playing non-computer games. Some afraid to lose, some thinking that games are wasted time - where I would disagree, as I do see playing as a way of joyful education. It's always training the brain, even 1st person shooters do! Guess why any younglings, both human and animal always need to play so much - it's necessary. The older ones usually just have less time/energy to do it...

I've noticed similar things for sci-fi movies...usually the interest wasn't there because "it's too far away from the real world"...and those who did like such stuff usually went for those movies and series which did have much thought put into it. Not the effects-heavy people...B5 is a typical thing there: one of the most liked series, because of what was going on, not because of those battles.

I’m not generally one to wield the adminhammer, but I’m with xkcd on this one. So far it hasn’t been necessary to do anything, though. :-)

Well in our defense, although a lot of us are technically blokes. A fair few are also fathers and husbands. The kind of behavure your describing would get most of us killed.

It's like old farts fixing up a steam engine. Someone found a long lost programme and slowly over time a group of duffers decided to resurrect it.
Some people are committee, other just float around buffing the headlights.

This mind set by it's very nature tends to exclude sprouts, old dogs trying to be young pups, porn fiends and trollers. It also helps not having an online version of course, as nothing attracts idiots like the ability to repeatedly cook a 12 year old newbie in game, then spend the next 6 hours bragging about it on the game boards.

These actions are a waste of life, cringe-worthy and personally I'm to old to be dealing with it.
