Maybe one of the asteroids you shot was a Rock Hermit?

Just do a lot of jumps. Jumps make that police start to forget your reputation. You probably noticed that the main stations don't grant you docking permission. Docking manually still works as you now did as you seemed to save your game..

Oooh ... kinda, yeah. I'd put down a Scanner Targeting Enhancement as your next must-have ship upgrade!

The size is the big giveaway, though. A rock that you can see from a long way off, before it comes on the scanner, is most likely a Rock Hermit. Plus, you often see a little ship – a Bushmaster Miner, or an Adder, or a Cobra 1 – out mining other (uninhabited) asteroids in the vicinity.

I don't know, but "Hermit" would imply a small to singular number. They're often quite elderly, if that makes you feel any better! Tend to suffer from nasty coughs, too, a lot of them. And cirrhosis. Terrible cirrhosis.

Just as long as we don't start seeing Bechs Hermit's Fillets for sale, that's definitely where I'd draw the line! :D

In oolite, it's several. Since oolite does use those algorithms which elite did use, I guess that there also were several in the original.

Random Hits makes quite some fun with these things. The mission descriptions and reports of space bar visits are great!
