A possible inspiration particle?
Just received this stamp created by a friend of mine to celebrate the knighthood of Sir Terry Pratchett, and I was pondering would A'tuin make a good addition to the Ooniverse do you think?
Not that my meagre graphical skills could do it justice, but it kinda got me wondering a bit Has this been done anywhere in an OXP before?

That's gonna be a ton of subentities! I suppose it would have to be placed in Interstellar space, although how you would model the Discworld sun (and indeed the elephant that cocks it's leg to allow the sun to rise) is beyond me. But that's nothing new.

The truth, revealed!!
Ohhh no!!!! NOW I understand why they said that Raxxla would be moving through space! It's not witchspace technology for a full planet or moon as they try to make us believe (and thus being unable to find it), it's because it's mounted to a deep space turtle which moves it away from people who could find it!Captain Hesperus wrote:That's gonna be a ton of subentities! Building the Discworld
If anyone does feel inspired to build the Discworld, the best book to read is Laying Strata by Terry Pratchett. This SF novel is where the Discworld first appears in print. This novel gives the sole reason why an impossiablity like the Discworld can even exists and also shows why 'alien world' full of humans exists the same time as humans live here on Earth. (In fact Rincewind in The Colour of Magic actually winds up here on Earth for a few minutes after complaining how wrong the universe seems to be.)
As for modelling that monstrosity, I suggest that perhaps they start with a Ring World, a Dyson Sphere and maybe a Cosmic Tree or two first. (Name the novels where those come from )

Re: Building the Discworld
It's titled just Strata originally, but you're right that it's the first outing of the DW concept (which it obviously pre-dates).KZ9999 wrote:If anyone does feel inspired to build the Discworld, the best book to read is Laying Strata by Terry Pratchett. The first two of the models are more or less already considered (I would say Tarantis is a (small) ringworld and Dyson Spheres have been discussed elsewhere and aren't practically possible in Oolite).
But I agree with comments above that it would be an "interesting" model to do (in the ancient Chinese sense), and certainly not before 1.73 with a face/vertex limit. But I had a quick browse on t'net, and there are some stunning models out there of both elephants and turtles (OK so they cost about $200 each to license, but they're beautiful).
Maybe one for a little later, as another mark of the 25yr/40yr/60yr/knighthood to go with the stamp limited edition issue and all the other festivities.

Oops
Dang! I got the book title wrong. Blame my faulty organic data storage matrices. Then again I am about 100 years pass my warranty and 40 parsecs from the nearest service centre.
There could always be a tribute built by fans out there in deep space. More the size of a station in built in a simpler style. It could even be a few huge promotional real estate signs saying 'Future site of Discworld. Be the first to invest in the magic.'

While I recognise that Elite is British in origin... we can't very well start having famous Brits hanging around in interstellar Ooniverse, now can we...
In that case H.G Wells is a dead ringer... and we could go on and on...
just my 2 cents
