On a related topic - discovered how to use the fancy mapping tools in wings ...
Spot the seams.
Here's the crash course howto (click the thumb):
Looks like I may be redoing the asteroids after all - I can normal map them too. Tee hee.

SimonB congratulations!!!
This is the first time that I truly believe that a replacement set is possible. Your ships look fantastic. The log still complains about
Concerning the aegidian specials I do not know if you are aware but the following 2 oxps made my aegidian have almost the same context:
1.Aegidian specials
2.Aegidian x ships (there is also a mistake on the wiki. The taipan is not included in this oxp but the sidewinder special)
Actually if you add only the Massurana into the Aegidian x-ships you can make an oxp that can replace both of them.
I do now know how you are going to release the Aegidian special replacement (probably as an oxp) so I am telling you that for avoiding possible clashes. Maybe it would be nice to release an oxp that replace both of them
Carry on the good work!!

Ah - forgot about the ball turret ... it is safe to erase the entry. I have a model for it but it is currently unused.
The mussurana is a one-off.
In general - the formula to converting an existing model to this style is to select all the surfaces you want to remain flat and bump them - just a smidge. Without deselecting, nudge everything to -z and the -y.
Now deselect - the bump process has drawn a border around the selected panels, select everything inside the border and hit smooth.
That will give you the basic shape. You main decision is how to do the exhausts and the bridge. This may mean undoing the last step so you can set up the panels.
The rest is cosmetic. Perhaps I'll demo.

Thank you Star Gazer, I do indeed mean Miranda! (Trivial titbit: 'Miranda' was also Tony Blair's nickname when he was at school. Ahhh, bless.)Star Gazer wrote:I assume you mean Miranda - one of Uranus' moons.

Here's an interesting side note.
Referring to the issues about the over sizing of ships in the game in relation to human scale.
If you look at the original Elite manual, the Cobra mk 3 is 65l x 30h x 130w in feet or 19.5l x 10h x 39w in metres. In Oolite the Cobra is now, 59l x 26l x 131w metres.
No wonder the ships seam so oversized.
While it would be nice to rescale the sizing back to the original scales, it's too entrenched to change now.

Re: Here's an interesting side note.
I don't think the hugeness of the ships compared to humans is such a big deal - it's the way different craft are out of proportion with each other which gives pause.KZ9999 wrote:Referring to the issues about the over sizing of ships in the game in relation to human scale.
Even converting to feet does not make this go away - and the meter scale makes other things, like insystem distances, more effective.
I have posted a comparison of scales, including a rescaled-to-be-more-consistent cobra mk3 ... the question asked is: does it make sense to use a reduced size mk3?
There were also questions asked about the boa relative scales and the fighters. And Ahrumen suggested that some of the ships could benifit from more bulk ... a scale-up to meet the original specs. I understand this also affects the amount of damage a ship can take (though I can just up the density to compensate IIRC).
The questions have met with zero interest ... however, I think they are important ones in terms of the feel of the game.
By default, I am staying close to the current specs.
