Solved: Buying and selling ships for fun and profit

Post by BlueSparky »

Hi all,

I have recently found Oolite and have been getting back to the good old days (and nights) of Elite on the c64, but I digress... Awesome work to update this masterpiece!

One thing I noticed was that in Oolite it is possible to trade ships (via the f3 x 2 screen) and make a profit by performing multiple trades back to back.

It seems as though you always make a profit as long as the ship you are buying has some upgrades (i.e. is not the standard customer model).

To reproduce this behavior:

- find a planet with lots of ships for sale
- note down your total available (cash + trade in)
- buy as many ships as you can afford which are not standard customer models
- watch you total available go up

Is this by design or is it a bug?

It seems (although I have not done the maths) that the total available is using the full price of the ship + mods as new whereas the buy price is a lower (discounted) price...

Which version are you using? In the more recent versions this is prevented by having a reduced trade in value (25% I think) so it is very hard to make money doing this.

Updated: Ah apologies - definitely happening in v1.65 but definately not happening in 1.7.2

Looks like I need to find another more "honest" way to make money...
