Cheating

Post by sully »

Ok, I know some of you guys are purists, and believe that the game should be played the honest way, and I respect that.

But, I dont have much time to get heavily involved in games these days, so im asking is there any way of hacking the save file to increase my number of kills?

The main reason I want to do this is because i've just installed Assassins, a great oxp btw, but its become clear after reading up that I will only get offered missions every 200 kills or so.

For the record, i'm Dangerous with 600+ kills and i've been sporadically playing since 2006, but my job and family are getting in the way!!!

The save game files for Oolite are simple text files that any text editor can open. So, use the text editor of your choice to open the savefile and find the entry ship_kills. It should have a number in the line below, like this:
<key>ship_kills</key>
<integer>4544</integer>

Change the number to whatever you want, save and load up your savefile in Oolite. That's all.

Don't use Word, though.

a simple texteditor that doesn't add formatting etc is in order

Ok. Just edited one of my Competant save files to see if it works.

When I reloaded the game the file had dissapeared from the load options?

Any ideas?

1.) Check the savegame file and make sure it is saved as the same file extention as the rest.
or
2.) Check to make sure that the savegame file is still in the same folder as the rest.
or
3.) Copy+paste another savefile, adjust that and try again.

P.S. tut-tut! cheating......

It needs to stay in .plist format. As this is a Mac format if you save your file with the 'save as' function, Windows will mess up the format and so Oolite won't read it any more. Just make the change, exit and say yes to save changes, then it should still be readable.

Double click it and open it with notepad. Select find for "ship_kills" to jump you to the text for ship kills. Scroll across to the number. Delete the number and type in the new one. Then select file and exit. When windows say Save Changes ? click yes.

Are you sure that Notepad has not added any default .txt extensions to your files (although LB's method should work, really). Make sure you have set Windows to not hide extensions for known file types. The correct extension for the saved games is *.oolite-save. Ensure that you don't have any files with extensions like *.oolite-save.txt.

Damn. I'm at a complete loss? Everything you've all said is as it is.

But for some reason it wont read them? If I save a new game, that appears in the save folder with the other saves, and the files are identical.

Im getting annoyed now!!!

Can you please post one of the savegames that Oolite can't see?

Thanks guys but i've sorted it. Not sure what the problem was but I overcame it by copying and pasting my Dangerous save into a recent Mostly Harmless save.

Cheers all.
