Player ship turrets?

Post by nOvAkNiGhT »

Hi, I like the idea of player ship turrets.. but I only know of 2 ships which can actually use them (Navy constitution and juggernaut). Having tried the 2 dragon ships which have them I haven't actually got them to use the turrets yet. I heard the Liberator has turrets but I couldn't get those to work either.

But anyway my questions are are there any other ships with turrets? And are the OXPs for the dragon and the Liberator bugged (Liberator is from realistic shipyards)?
One reason the OXPs may not be working properly is that I'm using a mac.

Hi nOvAkNiGhT,

welcome to Oolite!
I only know of 2 ships which can actually use them (Navy constitution and juggernaut). Having tried the 2 dragon ships which have them I haven't actually got them to use the turrets yet. I heard the Liberator has turrets but I couldn't get those to work either.
The reason being, that RS 3.02b is from before Oolite 1.72 came out, and player turrets were not working before then - so your Liberator can't use its ...

The good news is, that an RS successor is in the works, with a bit more ships with turrets in, which actually work. They utilise the new functions since 1.72, but its still a ways off from being published.
And are the OXPs for the dragon and the Liberator bugged (Liberator is from realistic shipyards)?
The original Liberator oxp doesn't let you buy & fly a Liberator yourself, only the RS version will do that. The Liberator turret will work in the RS successor, but not yet.

The Dragon oxp, if you use that and RS in conjunction (Dragon.oxp has been updated by its author since RS 3.02b came out, so you should use the new Dragon.oxp together with RS for the time being) you should rename dragon oxp into zzzzzdragon.oxp, so that Commander Wyvern's new models and specs are being used.

Hope that helps

I've got a turreted "work in progress" that works fine on a mac (I'm running 1.72 though). You do need to target something before the turrets will let loose however, that may be where your going wrong.

Yeah the two navy starships need you to target hostile ships for their turrets to work, and the dragon just attacks any hostile ships, you don't need to target :)

But yeah I had tried targeting ships too

I had tried the GriffBoa and could get the turrets to target, but not to fire on the first flight, but later when I tried it, turrets worked fine. Shot down a Liberator before it was fully finished launching ;) Typically 1-2 seconds before an enemy craft was shot down, IF I managed to rotate my ship in order to have multiple turrets being able to aim.

err...No.
The Dragon's turrets won't fire unless two conditions are met.
1) You have a ship targeted
2) The targeted ship is hostile, in range of the turret's plasma gun, and an immediate threat.

It works that way for any turreted player ship, unless there's a bug in RS changing that behavior. (Possible, RS causes a variety of weird behaviors.)

It does work like that for any turreted ship, including any and all RS ships with turrets, as player turrets behaviour is hardcoded into the game itself.

Yes you were right that was just me not really paying attention. The Dragon ships DO need you to target something to fire at them.

Auto-firing turrets at all hostile targets would just be too unfair.
I shot him back first. That is to say, I read his mind and fired before he would have fired on me. No, sir, he wasn't a fugitive.

Unfair maybe but (as oppenheimer put it) "is it DO-able?"

Looking at existing ai scripts, I'd have to say maybe.

I'll draw up a flow sheet have it hacked apart on the boards and that way I might evolve an AI.

If it's a fair fight ya want, then become a prize fighter.

During an attack, you should want any and all unfair advantages in your favor. You should want to defeat any enemy quickly and with minimal risks or losses.

Ideally, you'll deter potential opponents before they attack in the first place and go about your profitable business unmolested.

Unless you play oolite for the thrill of combat... I mean, say someone on the forums does.. I mean...

Should has never been a boundry for humanity, only can.

Admitedly it would turn ooite into a bit of an auto-pilot at close range. That said this is more of a oooo that's cool, now lets bundle it as a very obscure option, some where in the back end of a seldom used oxp.

If on the other hand it can't be done then all that has been wasted is time.

@CptnEcho:
All you need is a supply of cascade bombs to drop in your wake. Pretty much guaranteed kills without having to dogfight, since NPCs are generally too stupid to evade a cascade blast. And most definitely not fair. Heh.

@Wacky:
It's not so much living for the thrill of combat, as exploring career choices more exciting than milk runs. Since Thargs and pirates are trying to kill you anyway, might as well make some creds killing them first! :)
