Strange failure to initialise game window - have term only

I have run the 1.65 autopackage installation and on first run and second run I have encountered the main game window flashing open and then vanishing - but the console window remains open and the application appears to be running - the sound is certainly playing the music.

I have used ctrl-c to break execution.

I have openGL working well - the system is running an intel945 card and compiz-fusion runs fast and cleanly - glxgears reports:

Could it be a problem with GEM (not)implementation and the TTM fallback??
