1.72 display error

Post by tinker »

I am fairly sure I saw this error, or something like it, reported earlier but I cannot find it.

I have just upgraded to 1.72, Linux 64 bit and now I have got some graphic distortions in the background. Various light coloured square shapes of different sizes all over the background, the stars show through, but it is still disconcerting.

I did find this in stderr

Code: Select all

libpng error: attempt to read beyond end of file (/home/rhian/oolite-dev/oolite-dev-source-1.72/oolite.app/Resources/Textures/oolite-nebula-4.png), file may be truncated.
The file in 1.72 is only 9.5k, in 1.71.2 is was 20k, is it safe to assume that these files have not changed between versions and that I can replace the defective one with the old one?

Yes, using the old versions of the nebula texture should be fine.

If you want to make sure, you can get the nebula textures here:

Many thanks, it was just the one that got corrupted and I used the 1.71.2 one I had, everything looks to be OK now.

I would like to add to this, that on the windows version, i got no such error report, however downloading the nebula files from the trunk and replacing them fixed my display problem for now.

ofcourse i cannot promise of the problem resurfaces...

WILD guees. my problem was 1 corrupted file, so when it did not use that particular file everything seemed to work fine.

I found the same problem, now that i went back and looked at 1.70, 1.71, 1.71.2

appearently there may be a corrupt file in the windows version :S..

Ofcourse i cannot be 100% sure...

offcourse, on launch today, the problem came back...

System Redux planets texture gets to be one coloured, resempling the planets overall colour scheme...

Nebulas become squared transparent again...

I tried pasting the above mentioned downloaded files into the resource directory again... But this time it did´nt solve anything...

I then used photoshop, to open each nebula file, and save them again, without altering anything ofcourse

And now the problem have vanished again...

I just tried to use the galaxy256.png file instead of the oolite-nebula-x.png files...

No effect...

however i now also noticed that my stars are also squared blops.. this seems to indicate a problem with the new sky drawing code

The galaxy256 file in 1.65 seems to be different, it seems to be a transparent png, where the nebula it self is white, and the background is transparent.. at least when i open it in photoshop...

So for my next test, i´m going to use that in 1.72 and see if it works

note that i have redownloaded the Oolite Nebulas, overwritten the ones in textures with the downloaded ones three times allready...

Edit using the galaxy256.png file as replacement for 1.72 nebula files did´nt work, it becomes 1 tranparent color all over instead of the gradiants...

Succes.. 16 bit vs 32 bit....

Switched screen setting from 32 bit to 16 bit... got shapes...

then replaced the oolite nebulas, with the downloaded ones...
and now it all seems to work..

Switched back to 32 bit...

Why would changing screen colour depth Fix it...

at least it works again... for now... :S

Edit, just saw 1.72.1 is out, with a possible fix...

all this above was for plain 1.72

Frame, the more I read your describing the problem, the more I am becoming convinced that it is a graphics driver issue.

i´m going to countercheck on my wife´s laptop later and see if that is getting the same error, with an geforce 7600go...

She is however running XP, not vista....

On a side note, i just got myself a new monitor... or should i call it flat screen...

On my old monitor, everything in Oolite was terrible dark, so i had to up the gamma and brightness setting to see the nebulas and stars... those with the transparency masks...

This was likewise on my ATI X800 card, and is now with my HD2600 card..

I always presumed that it was my old monitor that was to blame, however with this new wide-screen flat-screen everything is still terrible dark, so i have to either profile a setting that i have to pick everytime, and deactivate when i close Oolite.. since i get the oppersite problem when leaving Oolite then everything is to bright....

EDIT: found this bit of helpfull information
photoshop wrote:
The gamma value of a computer monitor affects how light or dark an image looks in a web browser. Because Windows systems use a gamma of 2.2, images look darker on Windows than on Mac OS systems, which are normally set to a gamma of 1.8.
so here comes one of my wild speculations...

ATI card users defualt settings are to dark to see the nebulas & stars, and hence do not know of the stars and nebulas and therefore do not report these as errors...

Anyway, i´m going to lob in Question to a Game Developer i know(he should have some free time now, with christmass so near), in regard to this transparency thing... Asking ATI can´t hurt either... especially on Vista Questions.

I´m going to post any answer i get here... along with the Question i ASk ofcourse...

i`m still waiting for an answer.. guees it is the weekend...

anyway, here is an gamma edited image... edited in image ready...
that shows the blop problem, you can even make out the square stars.. this was in the leesti system.. with no OXP installed.. using a clean 1.72.1 install.

ATM i´m downloading an older driver for my GFX card, and see if that has any positive effect...
