Scoop cam is a nice touch... This is quite a premium ship!
It's also beautiful!
I shot him back first. That is to say, I read his mind and fired before he would have fired on me. No, sir, he wasn't a fugitive.

I came across one of these beautiful beasts in a Feudal system.
When it opened up on me with it's broadside turrets, I felt it was a pirate ship. My bounty scanner only confirmed that suspicion as I lit the injectors and scrambled out of the reach of the Boa's cannons.
I turned and trained my military laser upon it, launched a hardhead, and raked it's side with a quick burst from my laser. Then the missile struck home, right up the Boa's exhaust ports, followed by a bright flash as the Boa erupted in a large fireball...

Funny, I was expecting a long drawn out exchange of fire, a hot laser and empty missile magazine by the time I finished the Boa. The kill was too easy, my victory came bittersweet at best.

BTW, I'm elated to report that this sexy beast is making no drain to my framerate, and I'm not playing on hot new hardware. Rather a 12 or so year old Athalon single-core with less than a gig of ram. The fastest thing in it is the Geforce FX card.

I'm glad to hear it's not bogging down the game too much, did you happen to notice what colour the hull was - i've seen some real shockers, i used a script to spawn loads of them all around the main station whilst testing the oxp and there were a lot of mustard yellow, bright green and poo brown boas floating around, it seems their pilots have no taste :D

Love the ship Griff and I don't think its slowing the game down. I can't run shaders on my system, but the Griff Boa still looks good and there's no noticable drop in frame rate when one's on screen. On the stats, I'd vote for bumping it up to slightly better than the Python Class Cruiser and allowing all equipment (price perhaps twice as much as the PCC). I don't think that'd make it an uber ship, but it is a mean looking frieghter and giving it the stats for the best freighter available to the player would fit its looks. For the NPC version I'd also give it high chances for all equipment and perhaps a forward Military. It looks like the sort of ship a grizzeled old trader would arm to the teath to trade in Anarchies. Maybe a rare pirate (0.5) also well armed; a captured fighting trade ship like Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge!

I love it Griff - if only I could get Oolite 1.72 to rsync on my Ubuntu install then I could actually play it!!!

+1

As it is, it's well armed but the hull is too weak. In the parlance of a Random Hits bounty hunter, the Griff Boa would be no sweat for a Harmless plebe with a hardhead.

The Griff Krait is likewise a too easy kill - a burst from a mil laser right in it's cockpit area, boom, it's done. I totally agree with LB; Griff, crank up the max_energy on your ships.

For reference, a max_energy of 64 = one energy bank. 64 x 4 = 256, or four banks, the average for medium traders/heavy fighters, such as the Cobby and Dragon.

Thanks for the playtesting advice guys, i will definately add in your suggestions, probably when the oolite with the fix for the is_template bug comes out i'll update the oxp.
I'd like to randomise the paint colour on the griff kraits too, so i'll make those ships a wee bit stronger too when that oxp gets updated.

I've got to admit that i only play with my oxp ships installed just long enough to check that the graphics are working properly then i take them out so i don't really form a proper opinion of how weak/strong to make them. :)
edit: tsk tsk! fixed loads of spelling errors, 'griff krits' indeed

I had a quick look in Oolite's native shipdata.
Here's the energy stats for the native Krait and Boa 2:

Code: Select all

Boa Class Cruiser:
energy_recharge_rate = 3.2;
max_energy = 525;

Krait:
energy_recharge_rate = 2.5;
max_energy = 250;
Setting the energy stats about the same on the Griff ships should up their survivability factor, and make them a challenge in a fight as opposed to being well armed but easily shot down target drones. :)

Could I suggest these as stats for the Griff Boa. It makes it a little bit better all round than the PCC, but with a smaller cargo bay to reflect all the energy cells and stuff to power the turrets, but perhaps 5 missile slots instead of the PCC's 4 as it's quite a bit bigger. Base Price of around 560,000 C (fuel scoop as standard as the really nice scoop cam, makes it feel like the scoop is an inbuilt part of the ship rather than an optional extra). Thats 200k more than the PCC, but as player turrets now work gotta reflect that a bit in price. Might want to reduce the size of the model just a tad, as its a struggling to fit in the docking port.

Somthing like this perhaps for the NPCs and same stats for the player, if you facied combining the Griff Krait and Boa in a single OXP maybe 2 or 3 griff kraits as escorts?

Code: Select all

I cranked up the performance specs of the griff ships to match their native counterparts.

Griff Boa:

Code: Select all

"griff_NPC_boa_reference" =
	{
	aft_eject_position = "0.0 -21.85 -54.51";
	ai_type = "route1traderAI.plist";
	auto_ai = "true";
	cargo_type = "CARGO_NOT_CARGO";
	energy_recharge_rate = 3.2;
	exhaust = (
		"-8.1745  7.2756 -55.824  5.0 5.5 12.0",
	     "8.2011  7.2756 -55.824  5.0 5.5 12.0",
	     "0.0912 -2.124  -55.858   4.0  4.0  9.0"
			);
	forward_weapon_type = "WEAPON_NONE";
	fuel = 70;
	has_ecm = "true";
	has_escape_pod = "true";
	has_fuel_injection = "false";
	has_scoop = "true";
	likely_cargo = 12;
	max_cargo = 125;
	max_energy = 525;
	max_flight_pitch = 1;
	max_flight_roll = 2.5;
	max_flight_speed = 312;
	thrust = 40;
	max_missiles = 8;
	missiles = 8;
	missile_launch_position = "0.0 -26.8 73.26";
	model = "griff_boa_mainhull.dat";
	name = "Griff Boa";
	roles = "trader";
	scoop_position = "0.2912 -18.2102 59.6099";
	smooth = "true";
	frangible = "false";
And Griff Krait:

Code: Select all

"griff_krait_chrome_template" =
	{
	aft_eject_position = "-0.0619 -7.6734 -17.4954";
	ai_type = "pirateAI.plist";
	auto_ai = "true";
	cargo_type = "CARGO_NOT_CARGO";
	exhaust = (
		"-0.0619 15.754 -36.0396  5.0 5.0 15.0",
		"0.0619 2.4653 -25.3211  2.0 2.0 10.0"
			  );
	forward_weapon_type = "WEAPON_NONE";
	fuel = 50;
	has_ecm = "true";
	has_escape_pod = "false";
	has_fuel_injection = "true";
	has_shield_booster = "true";
	has_scoop = "true";
	likely_cargo = 1;
	max_cargo = 2;
	energy_recharge_rate = 2.5;
	max_energy = 250;
	max_flight_pitch = 1.5;
	max_flight_roll = 2.75;
	max_flight_speed = 300;
	max_missiles = 3;
	missiles = 1;
	missile_launch_position = "-0.0619 -10.8504 39.8487";
	model = "griff_krait_main_hull.dat";
	name = "GriffKrait";
	roles = "griff_krait_template";
	thrust = 36;
	smooth = "true";
	frangible = "true";
They can now take some abuse, no longer being instakill target drones.
And being better armed than their native cousins, they can now kick dents in iron asses.
