Some suggestions and help from a new user?

Post by Super Jamie »

Hi guys,

Thought I'd drop by and say hi. I just discovered Oolite and have lost the last week of my life, traveling from planet to planet increasing my credits and kills. What an awesome game, and with a very extensive plugin structure, it seems really well written too. Thanks, Aegidian!

I love old games, though I never really got into Elite back in its heyday, as I couldn't figure the controls out. I've been looking around, and it's disappointing to see Braben ruthlessly issuing takedowns to remakers, I have a copy of EliteTNK 1.0 around, it really had potential.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions:

Given the Cobra MkIII came out in 3100, isn't the game supposed to be set around 3150 or so? How come the game clock starts at 2084004 days? That's something like 5705 years.

Is there any interest in improving the wiki? I've made a few corrections here and there already, and would be more than happy to sit down and link to proper downloads, fill in details of all the OXP ships and stuff like that. Or are half of them "Price: Unknown" for a reason?

Heya SJ, greetings and welcome from a fellow BrisVegian (although exiled at present).

Commiserations on your loss of life.. it's happened to us all! :D

Feel free to improve the Wiki - everybody chips in as to their interest and capability to improve this great remake.

Cheers,
- Micha.

Welcome to this side of the ooniverse Jamie,
Please do, when you see omissions. Its a big job to keep everything up to date. Whenever I stumble over something I sometimes correct it, but there is a lot more. Also the download links are sometimes pointing to an old and wrong version. That is because the link in the collection page is changed to a new version, but not all the other places that point to this oxp. The easiest way to maintain this, is to give all oxp's that are linked to from more than one place its own page to download from.

As for the dates...

According to the unofficial timeline, 'Elite' took place in the year 3125, and so Oolite is set a few years later, in 3142, before the era of Elite 2 and First Encounters in 3199.

All utterly hypothetical, but if you like that sort of thing, Selezen has done a great job of making all the dates work from all the sources that are available on his timeline.

Cheers,

Drew.

Welcome Super Jamie! Only a week - it will eat up months, if not years of your life - I had to give it up when my new baby turned up last year! I'm back now though and it's sucking me in again!

Visited Brisbane and the surrounding area in 1997 - surreal seeing a huge Christmas tree in 35degC heat! Fantastic city.

Cool, thanks for the welcomes guys :)

Brisbane is pretty much the same as always - a big country town. It rains for a day, then is hot and humid until it dries up, then rains again. Next time you're yearning for Australian heat, I'm yearning for English cold ;) They are however tearing various spots apart to stick a busway under and around the city, and we're allowed to use hoses again after about a year of water restrictions!

I'll keep working on the wiki, I completed the Eagle Mk II article tonight, from just a stub page. Cheers Eric for the idea about a central download location, good idea, I'll stick to that standard.

Hi Jamie and Welcome
Yup it will take time. I played the original on the bbc way back when and on that there were many weekends and many late nights lost. Though did get to elite. My little brother put me on to Oolite about 3 or 4 months ago with the warning "Don't go loosing your mind to this one too" But alas... Too late. Already Deadly and just bought a super cobra yesterday.
Tip 1 Don't add all the oxp's straight away, makes it way to dangerous to leave the planet.
Tip 2 Work up to a big bus quick, I found the Python Cruiser Class to be excelent.
Tip 3 Take on contracts, 8 for price list then 8 again for contracts, wouldn't worry about hauling bods, they don't pay much. After a few runs hauling heavy goods you should start getting the gold n stuff, very profitable.
Happy blasting
