I missed the episode on TV (too engrossed in assembling Ikea kitchen furniture for my mother)...
...and now the Five website won't show me the episode because "You don't have the correct media player". Not very Mac-friendly....
(although I can't help wondering whether this method for saving BBC iPlayer movies to Mac HDDs will also work for Channel Five's online content... )

"That's no vicious Treeoid. That's my wife."
It wasn't a bad program, but there wasn't a lot that real Elite fans wouldn't already know.
It was nice to see Mr Braben and Mr Bell taking about how they overcame the problems with the development.
You never get to see both of them together though
The one thing I didn't previously know was that the fantastic 3D scanner was actually a very late addition to the game - actually delaying its planned release date!
All in all, it was good to see such an important milestone in computer gaming 'finally' being given the publicity it deserves on mainstream television - and not even on a program specifically about games.
(If the above post reads a bit strangely - it's because I'm currently recovering from flu, and so am not really thinking straight at the moment
EDIT - That's bad about Macs not being able to use the Ch5 viewer (I use a Mac too). Might have to email them about that

So, have Ian and David buried the hatchet in order to make this programme? (I notice they weren't interviewed at the same time).
Ian Bell is a right geek isn't he? Prefer him to David though...
Not a bad effort, given it was Channel 5, but Elite was definitely not the first '3D Game' to feature wireframe vector graphics, though it was the first one I recall that did 'hidden line removal'. There were also quite a few other games that had dispensed with the highscore/3 lives mantra by that point.
Not to take anything away from it though, nice to be reminded how revolutionary it was at the time, and see it in the context again. Even better to remember you were a part of it back in 1983/84. I very clearly recall getting Elite for my 14 birthday on the ZX Spectrum, unpacking the box (Cassette, Lensloc, Ship Ident Chart, The Dark Wheel, Manual, Keyboard overlay) - God that was exciting.
Shame they skipped over the implementation of the Fibonachi sequence a bit quick, but at least it got a mention. I remember how impressed when I understood how you could generate 2400 planets worth of information in a few bytes of code.
I also hadn't realised the 3d scanner was a late inclusion, so a bit of education there! Always nice to learn something new about Elite...
Can't view the programme on my open source OS either. Fortunately saved it on my PVR, so will slurp it onto my laptop later on.
Cheers,
Drew.

I bet the marketing bods at Thorn EMI hung themselves after they saw the sales figures on the first run of Elite. If they didn't then somebody might have....
