Any call for a DIY custom Cobra?

Post by Davidtq »

Wandering if theres likely to be any use out there for something Ive put together?

Its a small oxp to allow new players with minimum hassle and no knowledge of xml to "customise" a cobra, with a plain white with black lines texture for them to edit in any paint package and some simple instructions on how to change the ships name and price so they can trade ships without losing money, and have a home painted customised cobra without having to go to the hassle of learning about plists models or creating textures.

All they need to do is draw on the blank texture and edit the name of the ship and credit cost.

I havent got a decent paint package here at home, so on monday Im going to create a "layered" image for users with a better paint package so a user can paint the back ground and keep the nice original engines etc and then save as a png.

Planning on putting in some nice simple instructions on how to use and edit the oxp.

I made this for my own use but the thought I cant be the only person who wanted a custom paint job and name on their cobra :D

This is the Instructions so far:-

Do these sound simple enough?
Heres how to customise your Cobra Mk3 in 3 easy steps

First the “hard” part write down a list of your current cobras purchased extras and add up their value based on the following prices:-

Advanced Space Compass 650
Beam Lasers 1000each
Docking Computers 1500
ECM system 600
Energy Bomb 900
Escape Pod 1000
Extra Energy Unit 1500
Fuel Scoop 525
Galactic Hyperdrive 5000
Large Cargo Bay 400
Military Lasers 6000each
Military Shield Enhancement 47550
Mining Lasers 800each
Multi-Targeting System 325
Passenger Berth 825each
Pulse Lasers 400 each
Shield Boosters 14750
Targeting Enhancement 450
Witchdrive Fuel Injectors 600

Add up your total and write that down somewhere.

Next start up a new instance of a text editor (keep this one open) then using that text editor open the file shipyard.plist (found in the config folder) DONT LET ALL THAT CODE SCARE YOU, you are looking for a line that looks like this:-

<key>price</key>

<integer>106875</integer>

Now what you do is a quick bit of maths you take away the figure you wrote donw earlier form the 106875 and change the number between the <integer> and </integer> to the number you got. (this will give you the cash to rebuy all your equipment so you don’t lose out by moving over to the Cobra Custom!) Entering the correct figure here is down to your conscience! the game has NO way of knowing if you are entering the correct figure here!

Thats the hard part over, save your file, making sure you overwrite the original shipyard.plist

Next up open the shipdata.plist file (found in the config folder again) in the text editor, this time you are looking for the not so subtle line that looks like this:-

<key>name</key>

<string>your name here!</string>

edit the text between the <string> and </string> that bit where it says your name here! delete the “your name here!” and type in the name you want your ship to be known by.

Save the file overwriting the original again.

Now you have settled the price and the name of your ship its time for the fun part Get your paint program started up and open the diycobra3_auv.png file This is a texture file don’t let the term scare you this is your canvas! the engines cockpit etc are already filled in andyou can paint the rest of the ship as you see fit, the sections of the ship are labeled for your convenience Draw over this however you see fit to decorate your ship then save the file open close down all your editing tools launch oolite and head to a tech level 14 system to find your customised cobra there for sale, Buy the ship, re equip it as you see fit and enjoy!
