Where do I buy a cloaking device?

Post by JohnnyBoy »

I've played Oolite for a couple of years now, and I've never been offered a cloaking device. Is there a certain tech-level of planet that sells them? Do I have to buy them from a Rock Hermit? Where would I find one?

Hi JohnnyBoy,

you can`t buy one. You just can ... obtain ... one, later in the game.

Buy a cloaking device?
You don't.

The cloaking device must be earned on a native mission on Galaxy 5. The only other way to get it is called 'cheating' and involves fiddling with your savegame.
You know those who, having been mugged and stabbed, fired, dog run over, house burned down, wife eloped with best friend, daughters becoming prostitutes and their countries invaded - still say that "all is well"?
I'm obviously not one of them.

But it is not a mission you get while docked, like the trumbles or the constrictor hunt. It just happens in mid air. If you miss it, the mission is over and will not be offered again. It is rather primitive, but a good copy of the original Elite mission as I remember it.

So I won't be offered a cloaking device before I get to Galaxy 5? I've been cruising around Galaxy 3 for months. Maybe now is a good time for a change...

Hi Johnnyboy, The cloaking device thing is obtained in a small mission built in to Oolite, it is not an OXP!

*SPOILER* left click and drag your mouse down.

You have to be in galaxy 5 and your best chance is to kill everything that moves except the cops, and make sure you have a scoop fitted to your ship!

Well, I'm now in Galaxy 4. Just wondering how long to hang around before going to G5... :?

There are at least two mission.oxp's in that galaxy (deposed and lovecats). Probably you want to do them first.

There's also the native nova mission, which you should complete before deposed, there used to be a conflict if you had them both running at the same time, though I'm not sure if that has been fixed now.

It's fixed in the current release on the wiki. When that version of deposed is installed, the nova mission is suppressed so it will not happen until the moment deposed allows it.

Is it a mission like say, the constrictor mission, You know, with a mission screen that tells you your mission? Or if you kill something, there is a small chance that there will be a cloak?

Don't Panic: FSOneblin

EDIT: never mind: I got one. Those cops won't know what hit them.
