Commander reverts to Jameson on death

Post by Wiggy »

Since installing 1.71 (Mac), if I die, I don't go to the last save, but restart at Lave with 100 Cr!
Is this a known issue?
You came in that? You're braver than I thought!

It's a known issue, actually it was changed on purpose. (it took 3 attempts to get it right, would you believe)! :)

As per the reason of the change, I think that the way it was working before caused a few subtle problems to Oolite's game engine. But another_commander should know a lot more about that than me.

Ehm... yeah... actually, I really don't know that much more and I honestly think that this change was the result of a misunderstanding. At some point, one commit - not sure by whom - changed the behavior, it was thought to be deliberate and was left as it is, with three attempts to get it right, as Kaks said.

I don't know if Ahruman would want this changed back, but given the effort it took to set it up, I would be reluctant to revert it at this point.

Strange that it was on purpose. What is than the function of "fast save??".

Presumably to stop you having to select a file to save to.

Actually, I like anything that makes it take longer to recover from an embarrassing death. In the original Elite, loading from tape took ages and that made the escape capsule actually worth having. With modern hardware, it´s not worth the credits, just hit space and try again.

There was already another "bug-report" about this, which ended when Ahruman blamed Kaks for the change and waited to see whom Kaks would blame. It ended there, because Kaks didn't take up the ball.

I’d actually like to throw away most of the game set-up and re-init code, and instead use the game loading code. When the game starts, load a basic Jameson from a built-in template game. When resetting, use the last saved game, which can be kept in memory.

Well, slap me with a fish & call me Wendy! :)

It looks like it 'just happened' then.

For my part, run with it I did: I assumed that the change was intentional, and did spend 'some' time getting it to work as 'intended'...

Hmmm, sounds like there might be a 1.71.3 soon...

Could be, but this is too complicated and stuff-breaking a change for a bug fix release. People will have to live with this one until 1.72, I think.

By the way: It seems this wasn't changed back in 1.72. Intentionally, or just forgotten?

Anyway, 'Press SPACE Commander' still leads to 'Jameson' in 1.72.

Just wanted to mention it some time.
