Galactic map - with data

Post by Setu »

I have just discovered a feature which I have never seen documented. If, in the local map, you press "I" (for information I suppose), then symbols are out against each system showing what tech level, type, political level etc it is. I am trying to work out a method of getting a screen grab, to create a summary table.
Currently, normal methods of getting a screen grab don't work because I have to hold down the "I" key....

It is one of the better undocumented features! Don't know if this will help you, but there's a spreadsheet of all the planets in all 8 galaxies available to download from here.

Yes, it is a nice feature. Glad you have found it. BTW, it really helps to read the ReadMe (after all it screams "Read Me" at you!).
Oolite ReadMe wrote:
6 or f6 Long range / Short range star chart display (toggles between the two)
Use cursor keys or the mouse button to select a hyperdrive target system.
Use home key to select the current system.
On long range chart only, you may type a star name to locate it.
Also on the long range chart:
'!' saves a picture and text of the current galaxy star chart.
'?' takes you directly to the Passengers and Contracts display.
On the short range chart:
'i' shows information for each system (economy, government and tech level).

Also hitting f6 whilst burning away from pirates or police thus pressing the i key will give symbols of government and tech-level in the surrounding planets. Possibly avoiding more of the unwanteds on your tail.
It's a fine line between clever and stupid

That was exactly how I discovered it!
Thanks to all posters.

To all who offered advice on how to do a screen dump, thanks, but the problem is you have to hold the "i" key down to see the symbols, so all of the solutions where you hit some key combination to make a screen dump, don't work. I have found solution - on a mac, select the map, press "i", then take th focus off the game by selecting another program. Sometimes it freezes in the symbole mode, and I have been able to take a screenshot.

Or you could simply change the keyconfig.plist temporarily so that i = show symbols + take screen dump.

Or you could use /Applications/Utilities/Grab in “Timed Screen” capture mode. :-)
