Outrider to Frigate... Need Help

Post by matt634 »

Greetings Commanders

I need some help from the community. Several months ago I started an oxp adding armed convoys to the ooniverse. Most of the work was placing turrets on npc traders and giving them a mutal protection AI. I never could get the AI to work, but I ended up with several well armed traders.

Anyways, while tinkering with Roberto's Outrider I went a bit crazy, stretched out the model in DryDock, replaced the texture, added multiple turrets, reworked the shipconfig, and called it a Navy Frigate. I usually keep all my Frankenoxps to myself, but I really enjoy this one and would like to share.

Unfortunately, the original author, Roberto, hasn't been around for months, and I would like his permission before submitting anything based on his work. What should I do?

Have you tried PMming him? (personal messaging)
normally PM notifications get sent to the email adress people give, so you have a chance getting his attention this way.

But anyway, the 'oolite way' of doing things here is that everybody is free to use other people's work, as long as they acknowledge it in a readme file. People are often happy when it happens too. there was one notable exception, a while back, but the unwrittten rule here is that copying stuff is a sign of recognition :lol:

i've not been around for a while either, but if I came back and saw that someone had modified my ships I'd be happy that they thought mine were good enough to be used again.

(the mosquito trader by the way guys, a great ship to modify :))

Excellent to know, because in the Version 1.0 ReadMe I accidently gave credit for the Outrider model to YOU instead of Roberto :oops:

Hey there :) I have indeed not been around much lately - I got kind of disheartened over the impossibility of triggering a Q-bomb launch (a small thing in itself, but it derailed the OXP sequel I was working on). Anyway, I'm perfectly happy for my stuff to be modified (as 99.99% of Ooliters are, I suspect!), and I agree that the ship does look good scaled up :) Which makes sense, as the Star Destroyer shape was a major influence.

There's a ship I created for that currently-in-limbo OXP that sort of slots in between the Outrider and this new frigate, so if/when I rejoin the fray, we'll have a whole family of Outriders, which would be cool :) I need to improve my texturing skillz, though...

Hi Roberto.

On the launching a q-mine. If you give the ship:-

<key>has_energy_bomb</key>
<real>1.0</real>

in shipdata, then there is a high chance that it will launch an cascade mine (even if none are given to it in shipdata), whenever it does a performFlee in AI. So an ENERGY LOW = Set State to FLEE would do it. Its somthing the game code does itself if the ship has an e-bomb. It doesn't always do it, but does most of the time.

Thanks LB - I guess that's what I'll have to do. It's frustrating that there's no way of making it definite, though. I guess I might as well reveal what I was working on, since it's unlikely I'll be completing it for a while: a mission in which you attack a group of ships in an asteroid field located close to a sun (I positioned it so close that after a while some of the asteroids start exploding from the heat!), ending with the main enemy, nearly destroyed, launching a Q-bomb that, unless you've strayed from the field in the course of the fight, will set off a seriously nasty/awesome chain reaction... That's why I want a definite launch! :(

Haven't tested this but "scriptActionOnTarget: spawn: EQ_QC_MINE 1" in AI should work. "scriptActionOnTarget:" allows you to do things like setting mission variables or awarding equipment (I have tested these ones), that normally you can only do in script or shipdata.

Re: Outrider to Frigate... Need Help

This time 15 years after the last release but finally I was able to upload this OXP to the expansion manager. This is Roberto's original release from 2006. For further details please read below:

Outrider
========

2006, by Robert Todd (Roberto on Oolite Forums)
2021, brought back to life by Montana05

Overview
========

The Outrider is the first ship to be produced by Taranis Corp, a company co-founded by a former chief designer at Faulcon deLacy
and headquartered in the Lerelace system (28 light years from Lave). The vessel was conceived as a relatively well-specced
freighter escort, capable of offering serious resistance to the modern generation of fast attack ships, yet affordable enough
for the mass market. Taranis originally aimed to sell the ship for 100,000 credits, modifications to improve the hull rigidity
resulted in a final price tag of 110K.

Initially, sales of the Outrider were modest at best; however, since its prominent appearance in the hit film The Riedquat Connection,
it has become much more popular with shipping firms, bounty hunters of limited means and - reinforcing its "dangerous" image - pirates.

Notable features
================

The Outrider is available in two models - red and green - which are functionally identical.
It matches the Sidewinder for speed but not maneuverability. It is relatively big for a vessel of its type,
and despite its size, offers little room for cargo, on the other hand, it is on a par with the much larger Cobra Mk III
in terms of resilience. The ship is fitted with a pulse laser as standard.

Notes
=====

This is my first OXP, so let me know if I've made any horrible gaffes! Hopefully not.

Credits
=======

My thanks to Murgh, Selezen, Giles, Draco_Caeles and others for their advice, and to Daniel Walker for his texturing guide!

Version History
===============

V 1.10 / 2006/08/14:
New version modifying custom views and adding "laser darkness" to the textures and the defence ship for the Taranis OXP.

V 1.11 / 2021/05/22:
Added manifest.plist for uploading to the expansion manager

As soon as I have some more spare time I will convert the code and add better textures (actually I have already some drafts).

Well done, Montana!

On another note - the top of this thread is worth reading. Matt634's question and Rxke's answer - and Matt634 does not disagree with Rxke.

I feel very strongly that we could
1) Update Galactic Navy with Spara's work, naming Matt634 & Nemoricus as the authors/instigators
2) Add it to the Expansions Manager

If either ever come back and throw a grump, we can always remove it.
