Weird Red Triangles all over my Scanner on PC Oolite 1.65

Post by Variable »

Can anyone help me with this? I have just tried Oolite for the first time. Beautiful! Why couldn't Elite look this beautiful on my Spectrum in 1985?

Except for the weird triangles on the scanner.

The central scanner, instead of a lovely field of blips on a red grid, looks like a mess of strange red triangles, lines, whatever. Nothing changes when I zoom the ratio. The lines just redraw.. the red funkiness endures. Although the blips seem to behave normally, they can be quite difficult to see, especially when status is red.

Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone advise on how to get my scanner to behave properly? Maybe a new HUD, but that won't solve the glitch, will it? How about trying version 1.69? Please help Scanner Blind Variable! Thanks!

Hi, Variable, and first of all welcome to the boards and of course to this great game! :D

This problem of yours sounds (very) vaguely familiar to me, but from a long time ago. If you search the boards for old entries you probably would find something about it.

My first guess would be a graphics card problem, but I'm am (1) no PC user and (2) no hardware specialist. So I hope somebody else can help out.

Anyway, generally it would be helpful to know your configuration: OS, graphics card and of course game version. Please provide these informations when you're looking for help. Thanks.

And, when it's sorted out, have much fun playing!

Hi, Variable, I seem to recall the problem too, and it was indeed the graphics-card. IIRC, it was a specific onboard one and there was not really an answer to solve it :(

Weird Red Triangles Specification

Post by Variable »

McLane and Rxke, thanks for the replies.

I am running the 1.65 version on my trusty but boring 2005 no-name notebook PC running XP 2002 SP2 with 192MB RAM and a 1.40GHz Intel Celeron. The display adapter is a SiS M661FX/M661MX with driver 6.14.10.3680 from July 2005.

The same install works fine on my big PC which has a big-ass ATI Radeon card.

Must be my crappy laptop graphics! Any ideas on how to fix this? I’m going to look for a driver update online. If you could point me in the direction of some of these old posts that discuss the red triangle scenario, that would be great. Meantime, I'm flying blind but I love it!

It's bit of a low spec, and will struggle, if you can beef up the ram (although it's probably obsolete, you may still be able to find some) that may help, but having a celeron chip is a major disadvantage too.

Best of luck.
