Cloaking device
I'm galaxy 5, and it hasn't triggered the mission for the cloak, do I need to be at a particular planet or something?

You have to jump around for a while. There’s no briefing for this mission, it’s just something that happens while you’re flying around.

<SPOILER!!!!!>
Hang out in G5. You need to make at least 8 hyperspace jumps.
Sooner or later you'll meet a cloaked Asp. Kill him and scoop the "Unusual Cargo Canister". This will gain you the cloaking device. However, if you miss it, thats it - no chance to get the device.
Personally though I think the Cloak makes things too easy!

Is it just me or was this mission a bit of a let-down? I didn't even know it happened.
SPOILER - scroll down
About the only indication anything was happening is that I get 3 Asps that jump right in at the Witchspace marker and start firing at me, and that one of them is cloaked. I thought it was a game error because my ident indication was cycling in and out very rapidly. I didn't even look at the cargo canister, I usually don't ID them.
I was expecting some sort of text at the station saying how the military was looking for some guy with a cloaking device, but nothing. Instead when I checked my equipment I found I now had a cloaking device. Took me a while of stabbing at the keyboard to determine that it was triggered by the "0" (zero) key, I thought I needed to do something to activate it.
A bit anti-climactic for the final mission in the standard game?

I must admit, although it is cheating, it's a fun gadget to have. What's most interesting is pirates' reactions to it.
If you're in close quarters, they get so confused they stop dead and don't even react when you start firing at them. If they're on an evasive manouever they'll immediately stop the maneovering.
At long range they stop firing at you but will still continue their course.

The cloak is also the 'ultimate' ECM. Any hardened missiles and nukes on your tail will veer off and self-destruct when you turn the cloak on.
Just be careful not to damage it.

Down side is that any kills made while cloaked a) don't result in bounties awarded and b) don result in increments to your Elite Rating.Fraoch wrote:I discovered you can also be a bad guy and no one will notice. There's going to be a brisk business in replacement station buoys until I get sick of it.

As Hesperus has said, GalCop refuses to award credit for your kills when you're in stealth mode. Also, the cloak is a voracious energy vampire, gulping down power at a fantastic rate, especially when other systems have a power demand, ie shields recharging and weapons and ECM firing. I hope you managed to keep that NEU intact, you'll need it.
That said, the cloak is good for ---
- Stopping pirates in their tracks, including the injector-happy ones.
- Giving you time to recharge shields and cool the laser.
- Shaking hardheads and torpedos off your iron ass.
- Getting out of Dodge when the action gets too hot to handle. Even the Elite know when to run!

I have to take issue with this as Little Bear has often made this statement.Personally though I think the Cloak makes things too easy! Wink
There you are, a single ship, with only one laser at each position. You are jumped by a horde of ships. One or more have THREE front lasers. You need to go invisible until you can at least get close enough to be able to start hitting one of the sons of bachelors.
I see the cloaking device as the only way to even out the odds a little.
That said, on the Courier, the recharge rate is so fast that one can stay cloaked for a very long time - too long for the fight to be fair.
This will matter when (note optimism) we get a multiplayer version (Trumble vendors beware )
