Planet textures?

Post by elite »

Where are they and how do I install them?

I have seen a few screen shots that people have posted and they look great.

I still have planets with a 'patch work' pattern on them.

Also, is there a way to slow down the rotation of all planets?

I know you can enter values in the planetinfo.plist file under the Universal part so it effect all planets, but what would need to be added?

Thanks.

you are a regulary Question Gun.... aint ya ;-)

You need oolite 1.68 and then when in flight press P, then press T press P again, hyperspace into a system, and the planets have new textures...

BUT......

Your hyperspace jumps will take slightly longer because of the new planet textures are being generated, not read from a file...

and looking up planet info with the F7 key will also make a significant delay...

and once turned on, you cant turn it off during the game session, you need to quit and restart oolite to have it turned off again..

And btw Search Button do work ;-)....this Question has been answerd before.... but im cool with it,.. ;-)

What version of Oolite are you running? If you have the V.1.65, then dajt did a Textured Planets branch. If however, you are running V.1.68, then getting the cool textured planets is simple. when launching from a station press pause (usually p), then press t, a message will come up saying Procedural Textures On. Unpause and when you arrive at your destination planet, it should be textured. Simple.

Is there anyway of Texturing the planets in the Latest release? I'm running 1.72.2 on PC.
I've got some textures I'd love to drop onto the planets and a clouds texture too. Will this be something that might appear in later versions as a set of predefined textures in a folder that we can just drop our own over?

I have 10 planet textures and a Cloud texture if you'd like them I could send them and you'd be more than welcome to use them in 1.73 ;) Maybe the type of texture could be linked to the size of the planet maybe?
Small planets have a thin atmos and little vegitation (Moon like with clouds in the atmos)
Small Med planets still thin atmos but are more desert like.
Med planets are temperate and earthlike.
Med Large planets are mostly liquid based (water etc).
Large planets are pretty much Gas giants.

I have 2 textures that fit each of those categories. What do you think?

True you would get repeated planets that look exactly the same but I could live with that. At the moment the patchwork planets look a bit plain to be honest. Nice colour variation, but not very realistic.

Just a thought anyway :)

Yep, on 1.72.2 you can do it through javascript!

You can have a look inside the newly re-relased System Redux oxp to see how it's done, and for a quick and dirty job you could replace the textures inside that oxp with your own ones (they'll have to have the same name and format as the old ones, of course).

That way you're limited to 16 planet textures, and you can define which planet gets what texture. It's 'a bit' fiddly though...

Or look inside Famous Planets oxp! it does the same kind of thing, but the number or textures you can add is entirely up to you! :)
Hey, free OXPs: farsun v1.05 & tty v0.5! :0)
