Asteroid mining in deep space?

Post by elite »

Hi all.

When I played the original Elite game years ago I used to make my money by being a 'belter', mining asteroids and selling the minerals.

I still remember making loads of money that way without even leaving Lave itself. I just used to fly out into deep space and come across the odd asteroid and mine it. Then fly back to Lave when I had a full cargo hold.

My question is.... is this still possible with Oolite?

I have flown out away from Lave (and other systems) a few times and not come across anything.
Is there maybe a mod I don't know about that makes more asteroids (or other objects) appear in deep space?

Thanks.

Oh I forgot my second question lol.......

I downloaded a load of add on's and some of them say they need Oolite version 1.68 or upwards to work. I have v 1.65.
Is there a newer version of Oolite somewhere?

Thanks again.

Ships and asteroids appear in the general region of the space-lane to the planet. More realitic than Elite for ships, although not so for asteroids. So yes you can go mining but if you go too far into deep space they'll be nothing there. In Elite ships were generated near the player and only interacted with the player. In Oolite the are added to the system and get on this doing their own thing, including attacking each other.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Maybe someone could look into making an asteroid mod that places asteroids in deeper space?
Or maybe a local planet near Lave that always has an abundance of them?

Also the guy that gave the link..... thanks.

There are several ways to make money in Oolite, some are more exciting than others

Ach! You'll never live up to your user name with an attitude like that! By Giles' Holy Keyboard, what are they teaching these youngsters at the Lave Academy?

things like Zero-G Protesting, Zero-G Counter-Protesting, Zero-G Counter-Counter-Protesting, not to mention that with some simple graffiti, Lave acadamy can be changed to Love Academy or SLave Academy...

Becoming Elite is not for everybody.
It may be that he recognized that his ambitions/skills weren't up to the challenge, but his self image still demanded it... So he got himself this (non-capitalized) nickname!

"Hi, I'm Jonh."
"I'm elite, how do you do?"

I'm obviously not one of them.

That being the case (and often is), it's a good thing that the Spartacus Brotherhood is going to bring about the fourth Servile war! :D

As an additional information: Usually you will meet a couple of asteroid clusters on the way between witchpoint and planet. So if you launch from a station and haven't already destroyed the asteroids, it'll be a good idea to fly towards the witchpoint beacon. Unfortunately, asteroids won't be replaced once they are blown up.

Quite often there will also be a cluster somewhere behind the station, as seen from the witchpoint. On many occasions while closing to the station from the witchpoint I could see laser fire in the distance. I got curious and flew into that direction, passing the station. And then I found an asteroid cluster and a rock hermit within it. The laser fire I had seen was of a miner launching from that hermit. Of course, if the cluster has no hermit with a miner it will be hardly visible.

Therefore a final hint: Installing the AsteroidStorm2.oxp helps recognizing these distant clusters, as the giant asteroids within them can be spotted from very far away.

Follow the link on my signature. Its just version 2 though, which has a few code improvments and tweaks. Install over the old version if you don't already have V2.
