Any advice for a complete newbie

If you want to speed up space travel there are a couple of things you can do.
There is a corridor of space traffic between the witchpoint beacon and space station, if you fly away at a right angle from the beacon and then head for the space station, you'll avoid getting mass locked.
You can buy fuel injectors and "wizz" past the traffic and then go back to the jump drive, but remember it's always best to keep some fuel handy for a quick getaway if some nasties come along.

The keep working forever, but you do need hyperspace fuel! If your tank is empty then pressing i won't do anything.
It is possible they got damaged in a fight. If they have disappeared from the F5 screen, then they got damaged and you missed the "Fuel Injectors Damaged" message. If you check the F3 screen at a system with a high enough tech level to sell fuel injectors, then the option to repair them will be given.
On the Leagl Status, GalCop will forget about your mis-dead in time. As long as you don't commit any other offences, then after a certain number of hyperspace jumps you'll be clean again. Using an escape pod or buying another ship also clears your status.
