The downside of bounty hunting

Post by *cat »

What about the damage to your ship? Maybe everyone else is a better combateer than me? All very well getting 3k's worth of bounty, capture and insurance fees and free cargo, but what about the 4k's of damage that the frakers have done to your ship.
Recently I helped in the demise of the Black Baron's regime, got a nice fat reward, but spent 23000 on fixing my shield boosters; I think I should've detoured to a commie system for bargain repairs...
Worst of all, it wasn't the Baron's minions that did the damage (I sneaked past them, picked up my reward money, then thought I'd go out and take them out anyway, just for fun!) - it was a bunch of tooled-up pirates who thought my iron-arsed super-cobra needed some redecorating!

I found a nice part of galaxy 2 with loads of anarchies and feudal systems and a few very high tech systems (for spares and repair). Just jump into an anarchy and find the hermit thats always near the beacon. Fuel up my Python and kill everything in sight and scoop its goods. I do love it when you get those big freighters with about 6 cobby mk1s as escort. The cobbies are knocked into paperclips in about 30 seconds flat and the freighter usually streams its cargo out in a nice orderly line to be scooped and then you can deliver the coup de grace and scoop any debris and the escape pod.

Well, after I bought everything there was to be bought in the shields department, even 5-6 pirates shooting at me at the same time usually don't get to deplete them before I'm at their backs. I got the shield boosters, extra energy unit and some military thing that costs 47000 creds that is sure worth its money because it increases your shields for a factor of 1.5 which is just about enough to tip the balance.

On the other hand, you may be dealing with some expansion with stronger pirates.

Sorry, I'm new to Oolite, you mean repairs are cheaper at some places?

Where? Where?

And what does that "overhaul and repar" or something that costs a few thousand credits actually *do*? Is there a risk of malfunction if I don't do it regularly? How often should I do it, if at all?

The trade in value of your ship falls over time. Servicing restores it. A must therefore before you buy a new ship.

If you get Dr. Nil's Commies.oxp, the Collective Zero-Gravity Factory and the Solar Laboratory And Production Unit both produce standard equipment (even equipment only available at higher TL systems) at cut down prices.

Failing to repair means a larger chance of random witchspace malfunctions and, I think, fuel leaks.

It also increases the resale price of your ship which declines over time.

Really? My jump drive cuts out at different distances when I'm jumping towards suns before sunskimming and I've always assumed that it depended on how large the star was? With some the altimeter hasn't changed when the drive mass locks, while with others I end up so close that the fuel scoops are working straight away and the altimeter is in the red.

Reno: I think you’re right, and I was a bit surprised, but I couldn’t see any sun-rescaling code. I’ll look again later.

I suppose it must have something to do with the output of energy from the sun rather than it's size. Unless there is a factor that involves the suns mass.

On a related (but still off-topic) matter, how does a sun's corona relate to a) the distance at which the Fuel Scoops fire up, b) the rate at which your Cabin Temp. rises and as Reno asks, how come you get mass-locked by one sun when you aren't even reducing the altimeter and another you are halfway down the altimeter before you mass-lock?

You also want to to get the Naval Energy unit (if you haven't already)

You will need all the offensive and defensive kit to tangle with some of the beasties out there, particularly Assassins!

Ah… the size of the sun is set elsewhere. Its radius is [1.5, 3.5] * the radius of the main planet.
