Where, in the Elite Ooniverse, is Gliese 581?

Post by Gareth3377 »

Not sure where this should go, so I've posted here (doesn't matter if I'm wrong - my school is being Ofsteded at the moment so any abuse will be insignificant ho ho ho).

A Planet, Super-Earth as it's been tagged, has been discovered in the Gliese 581 system - apparently it may have water, which in turn may support life etc. etc. It is approximately 20 light years from us, Sol.

My question, which I think is very important, is...

Where in the Elite/Frontier universe is it. I know there have been some incredibly clever folks that have superimposed Elite galaxy 1 onto the Frontier (Elite II) map. So where is this system? Does anybody know what the hell I'm going on about? Wouldn't it be awesome if the inhabitant were Fierce Red Insects?

Anyway, I'll be back to Ooliting as soon as Ofsted have departed (hurrah!) and hope to boost my rating (Average and climbing all the time - despite the crashes).

Ta muchly people

Okay, technically I'm talking to myself, but what the hell (have I mentioned Ofsted? Lol)

What I wanted to add on to this post was that I recently bought PC Format, and what was on their DVD? 200 free games that's what. And do you know what game was on the DVD?

Go on, I bet you can't guess.

Can you?

Here's a clue...it begins with O and is a clone, if not superior version to the original (beginning with E).

Have fun

The CHEEKY so-and-sos!

On the other hand, why not?
Did they at least gave proper credit, or included any OXPs?

I'm obviously not one of them.

It'll just be the basic game, they'll be missing out on all the OXP's unless there was a readme pointing them in the right direction. How was it described? It'll be interesting to see who found Oolite this way. Is there anybody lurking out there who did?

Apparently its a Red Dwarf in the constilation of Libra. Check this link for full details on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581

Gravity of 2.2 times Earth, so any aliens are gonna be pretty strong. Maybe its the Thargoid home world!

On the Oolite in CD, as long as they included the Oolite readme they'll be links to this site Oosat, Oosat2 and the Wiki.
OXPS : The Assassins Guild, Asteroid Storm, The Bank of the Black Monks, Random Hits, The Galactic Almanac, Renegade Pirates can be downloaded from the Elite Wiki here.

Anybody else noticed that the planet is named in a (slightly misspelt) tribute to the Creator (of Oolite)?!

What I do when not reading the Oolite bulletin board!

Er, no. Redistribution is explicitly permitted by all three licenses Oolite has used.

As for Gliese 581 c, I wouldn’t trust everything you read on Wikipedia. Look for me in the page history. :-) (Gliese, incidentally, is the name of an astronomer who created a catalogue of stars… with more than 581 entries.)

Based on the statement that Gliese 581 is 20AU from Sol, it is possible that the planet might be in this area:

Image

That would put it at the top right corner of Gal1

A LOT of stuff would have to be right, and I'm no astronavigator. I have a computer on my Adder for that. This is based on my overlay map of the Frontier stars on top of Galaxy 1.

I wasn't complaining about the redistribution, I know the licenses allow it; besides I think the Ooniverse could become even better if more people (programmers) join in. My (humorous) point is they could have at least said hello... and putting a link wouldn't have been too difficult.

BTW, did they at least do that?

It's version 1.65 installer - the readme file must be within the installer package.

Nice to see the game getting out and about.

Intrestingly there are a few other games on the list

Space Trader - whose influence is VERY obvious
There is even a remake of Privateer - never played it though
