I came across a Gemenon Traveller in 3DS format submitted under the Creative Commons licence, can I convert it to run in Oolite?

That's a very pretty little ship!! ...you'd need to acknowledge the original source, of course...

I would think that if you took the engines off and made them subentities, that you would manage to get within the game's constraints of numbers of vertices and faces...
Very funny, Scotty, now beam down my clothes...

So just an acknowledgment to the original creator in a readme file is all that's required?

Sorry to ask such a stupid question, I just wasn't sure how far I could go with the Creative Commons licence.

wow, that's an amazing ship!
CaptKev, are you asking about the copyright part of bringing the ship into oolite or the file converting part, ie. changing the 3ds format file into a dat? if so, i think a .3ds file is a '3d studio max' file, you'll have to get someone with that program to export the file for you as an .obj (i think some of the modeling whizzes here use it), then you can use the obj2dattex.py script to change it into a .dat for oolite

There is no such thing as “the Creative Commons license.” Creative Commons provides several related licenses with different sets of terms.

If the license in question does not have the “No Derivative Works” term, you can convert it to Oolite.
If it has the “Share Alike” term, you must distribute your version under the same license as the original.
If it has the “Attribution” term, you must credit the original author. (It’s good form to do so even if you don’t have to, of course.)

Thanks for the quick response guys, I was more concerned about the copyright issue.

I think this line in the readme is saying I can't convert it: :(

It is...that's a shame.

Use it as a visual reference to build your own model and use the textures as a guide for making your own.

Either that or send me a copy and I'll have a look at making a working copy (with a poly count that might work in Oolite).
